That was interesting, Laurie. I like reading stuff like that. There is so much we have no clue of.

And do not worry. I plan to a) wait until a little later in the year to go back up to high elevations, and, B) carry a satellite phone with me. lol

My daughter saw that part where the father was missing and told me I caused her to have to have therapy. Poor thing! She had a bad anxiety attack.

that incidence was so terribly sad, if the family hadn't of had the

money to help with the search and get people motivated, they may not

have found the mom & kids in time at all. At the same time people were

searching for the Kim family, another man was snowbound in his car

(not lost just unable to drive out) in the foothills of Mt .

Luckily he was a professional snow camper, so although he got

terribly bored and despressed for spending so many days alone stuck in

his car, he did much better and was very grateful when they found him

and helped him dig out. He then went to join the search for the Kim

family.

Another family got stuck in Hood River county while hunting for a

christmas tree and they were there for 3 nights, and i know there were

a couple other incidences as well.

Part of the problem in Oregon is that the roads are technically

closed, but remain open for property owners to access their properties

and a lot of maps don't show the roads as being impassable in the winter.

my dad used to go up the forestry service roads in the winter and let

me tell you he went well equipped, food, blankets, winch, tow chains,

spare rope, firemaking supplies. gun, flares etc... All necessary

should you get stuck in the snow.

glad to know you'll be hiking safely with a satellite phone!

let me know when you're read to do the trail in Oregon, maybe i'll be

in shape enough to join up with you for a few miles!
