Hi, bleu.

The FDA now allows tryptophan to be sold for human use without a

prescription, but they require that the supplier have evidence that

their product is safe:

http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-tryp1.html

I suspect that the supplement manufacturers may be intimidated by

this, so that not many are supplying tryptophan.

I think there are still limits on importing tryptophan, though,

according to the notice at the above url.

Tryptophan is available on the internet. One company sells it for

veterinary use, and says openly on their site that they sell the

identically same product for human use, with a prescription! I think

they figure that people will read between the lines, order the

veterinary product, and take it themselves, leaving the company off

the hook as far as risking that the FDA might come after them for

proof that their product is safe for human use. Very clever!

And that is what happens all the time- more thn you think.

There's quite a bit of info out there on the use of trypto in horses-

it was used mainly to calm down an excited horse or a horse that got

agitated in new surroundings.. competitition rules prohibit alot of

drugs in horses- so trainers find ways to get around it.

I'm not sure it's used anymore- but can't really remember why..

Greetings:

I have used Tryptophan for pain and sleep after I discovered that muscle and joint pain were relieved by eating turkey last Thanksgiving. :) I am recovering from EBV and have struggled with CFS like symptoms.

Good luck.

Yes, I paid $39.95 at a local nutritional store in Eugene, Oregon, named Evergreen. I was in a whole lot of pain at the time so it was noticeable when eating the turkey changed that. It lifted the pain by about 30%. I didn't take much of the Tryptophan because it caused me to have about 4 hours of undisturbed sleep, but then I would wake up after that which I found annoying. So I have taken it from time to time when pain keeps me awake, it's very helpful for falling asleep, lifting mood and relieving pain.

I hope this helps you. The lady at the Evergreen store told me it was originally taken off the market due to poisoning caused by a secondary substance, not the tryptophan.Best of luck,

You'll have to experiment. Maybe I didn't take enough. But it flat put me to sleep, I doubt anyone could have awakend me, but like drinking a few glasses of wine before bed, four hours after falling asleep I woke up. Everybody's body is different, I didn't take near the maximum amount, but I was very ill, so it doesn't take too much in the way of drugs for it to be too much for me. Evergreen gave me a fantastic multi-page handout describing what the drug can do, hopefully you find a nutiritional store near you that does the same.

Sure, I appreciate your commenting on this. I am aware that it is an amino acid, I just have medical/biology terminology fatigue.

L-tryptophan and 5-Hydroxytryptophan are both precursers for

seritonin, a neurotransmitter. Precurser loading for seritonin can

help people with sleep problems, mild to moderate depression and

fibromyalgia symptoms. Banannas and turkey are good dietary sources of

L-tryptophan.
