As an audiologist (a hearing professional who specializes in

hyperacusis, I can advise you that in most cases, using earplugs

consistently will cause the auditory system to turn up its

sensitivity over time, or become more sensitive.

This has been supported in research which demonstrates this basic

principle: when deprived of sound, the inner mechanism of the central

neural system will increase its efforts to detect sound, thereby

creating more sensitivity to sound.

However, it can be hard to withstand all the negative noises that you

can hear without the earplugs, so it is a real catch-22.

hi marsha, bonnie here., long time since posted. remember me? the one with meniere's.. i often read your posts.. it is ,like you say just to easy to plug the ear up.. and i'm guilty of still doing it, myself.. i tried mp3 player, trying to increase the volume, but gosh, it makes it so hard to hear anyone else...times i can't hear phone ring or knocking at door.. and i can't afford those sound generators..plus it makes me dizzier... know you are specilaizing in the 4 s.., but do you see many people with meniere's disease?? if so, any ideas on how or what to do for the hyperacusis other than generators?? being deaf in one ear and going in the other and at same time , hyperacusis all from the meniere's.). my heart goes out to the people with 4 s to deal with too. !!!!! wishing you

many happy, healthy days for the new year...... bonnieanthro_pop wrote: As an audiologist (a hearing professional who specializes in hyperacusis, I can advise you that in most cases, using earplugs consistently will cause the auditory system to turn up its sensitivity over time, or become more sensitive. This has been supported in research which demonstrates this basic principle: when deprived of sound, the inner mechanism of the central neural system will increase
