Guest guest
I find this interesting. The latest topical acne medication is a combo of the antibiotic clindamycin and the antimicrobial benzoyl peroxide. http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/rxdrugprofiles/drugs/ben1593.shtml The other big acne drug is minocycline. And interestingly, the protocol at mp.com now uses both of these antibiotics. I've never been a huge fan of Clindamycin based on reports from people regarding its effectiveness (although, of course, everyone is different) Some interesting warnings from the manufacturer about Benzaclin: " As you use this antibiotic, organisms that are resistant to it may start to grow. If this occurs, your doctor will have you stop using BenzaClin. " (Boy, this is all we need in the world, another low dose abx treatment that increases bacterial resistance.) Although BenzaClin is applied only to the skin, some of this medication could be absorbed into the bloodstream. Once in the system, it has been known to cause severe colitis. Symptoms include severe or bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. This last risk is a well known side effect of clindamycin. Anyone using Clindamycin needs to watch out for excessive diarrhea, it can lead to death. Apparently, even in the low doses used in this topical application. Read this quote from Jenna (#4) at: http://www.acne.org/rate_item.php?item_id=124 " Alright. So I started using this stuff about a week and a half ago. I asked my doctor about an acne medication, and he gave me a free sample of this. So I used it everyother night for the first week, and than increased it to everynight. So, it worked well. My face got visibily clearer. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE NOT WORTH IT. This is gross, but I'm going to share to warn others. This stuff gives you SEVERE diarrhea. No joke. I think i might have colitis from this shit. ORALLY AND PARENTERALLY ADMINISTERED CLINDAMYCIN HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH SEVERE COLITIS WHICH MAY RESULT IN PATIENT DEATH. USE OF THE TOPICAL FORMULATION OF CLINDAMYCIN RESULTS IN ABSORPTION OF THE ANTIBIOTIC FROM THE SKIN SURFACE. DIARRHEA, BLOODY DIARRHEA, AND COLITIS (INCLUDING PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS) HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITH THE USE OF TOPICAL AND SYSTEMIC CLINDAMYCIN. STUDIES INDICATE A TOXIN (S) PRODUCED BY CLOSTRIDIA IS ONE PRIMARY CAUSE OF ANTIBIOTIC- ASSOCIATED COLITIS. THE COLITIS IS USUALLY CHARACTERIZED BY SEVERE PERSISTENT DIARRHEA AND SEVERE ABDOMINAL CRAMPS AND MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSAGE OF BLOOD AND MUCUS. ENDOSCOPIC EXAMINATION MAY REVEAL PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS. STOOL CULTURE FOR Clostridium Difficile AND STOOL ASSAY FOR C. Difficile TOXIN MAY BE HELPFUL DIAGNOSTICALLY. WHEN SIGNIFICANT DIARRHEA OCCURS, THE DRUG SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED. LARGE BOWEL ENDOSCOPY SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO ESTABLISH A DEFINITIVE DIAGNOSIS IN CASES OF SEVERE DIARRHEA. ANTIPERISTALTIC AGENTS SUCH AS OPIATES AND DIPHENOXYLATE WITH ATROPINE MAY PROLONG AND/OR WORSEN THE CONDITION. DIARRHEA, COLITIS, AND PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS COLITIS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED TO BEGIN UP TO SEVERAL WEEKS FOLLOWING CESSATION OF ORAL AND PARENTERAL THERAPY WITH CLINDAMYCIN. Sure, benzaclin works. But to me, it's not safe whatsoever. Just be careful using it. " (end quote)
Guest guest
Penny I feel getting acne is a good sign. I think because normally when your skin is under a lot of toxic assault it toughens not allowing the bacteria to push thru but to plane out- sort of like a fasciitis. So if you wouldn't feel good in the past and your skin didn't allow bacteria to push up like pimples and now you feel good, this may have some insight into what is going on.Basically young healthy people have great skin texture that flows well, normally, and if you have some of this going on and your sweating properly, it's all good. but the clindamycin is just another drug without too much fanafare as far as patients and getting well goes. It seems to have solved a patients bone infection, let's find that person. > I find this interesting.
