Guest guest
Has anyone else sat in front of someone at the theater and heard the crunching and rustling of paper and wrappers and such? What about baby crying in public, does it drive you nuts?
Guest guest
Its the reason I no longer go to the movies (or rarely go to the movies). I just can't deal with the noise at the movie theater unless I get that one seat that happens to have no seats behind it. I make my husband show up 30 minutes before a movie so that we can get the seat without seats behind it. Movies are an S4 sufferer's absolute nightmare. Fortunately, babies don't bug me at all. Maybe its because my mom always said that babies cry because they are " exercising their lungs " - that transformed the sound for me.And thank goodness because I am due to have my own baby in just 2 months. What about baby crying in public, does it drive you nuts? Yep! I can hardly stand going to the movies. My husband gets so mad at me cause there have been times where I'll just walk out during the movie. If he hears someone open a pop can or eat their popcorn he always looks over at me to see how I'm handling it, worrying that I'll freak out and want to go. You're not even supposed to have cans at a theater. I understand wanting to cut costs by sneaking in your own snacks but I hate the pop can opening noise and the sipping and the ahhhhh and don't even get me started on popcorn and f---ing candy wrappers! ALSO, Kids at an adult movies should just be illegal! They drive me nuts, rustling around, chatting, getting up and down over and over again, whispering, YES CRYING, tapping the back of your chair with their foot. If I take my daughter to a G movie, I expect to be annoyed but I'll endure it for her occasionally but at a rated R movie? C'mom! Guest guest
What helps me is I get popcorn too. I have to have it or else I pay attn to everyone else eating popcorn or chewing on something. It has really helped me. Re: In public Its the reason I no longer go to the movies (or rarely go to the movies). Guest guest
It's not just the movies - try the ordinary theatre! Possibly worse as theatre shows aren't generally as loud as films. I couldn't manage watching something in a theatre without sound generators in. Strange thing is that I've recently joined a theatre group - onstage should be ok as there is more space between people!! > >Reply-To: Soundsensitivity >To: Soundsensitivity >Subject: Re: In public >Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2006 02:35:25 -0000 > > > Has anyone else sat in front of someone at the theater and heard the > crunching and rustling of paper and wrappers and such? > > What about baby crying in public, does it drive you nuts? > >Yep! Guest guest
Kim, I love your post. I laughed so hard because I see myself exactly as you described your movie situation. Now I don't feel so all alone or so " wierd! Guest guest
The movies are a nightmare to me. Which is awful because I really love going to the movies and my friends do as well. It's one of those things that we do often. The sounds.. they drive me absolutely nuts. I went to see X-Men 3 on opening night with my friend (a movie I was looking forward to so much that it couldn't wait) and I was near the point of crying because it was a packed theater, full of kids under 15, eating and drinking and coughing and doing whatever they pleased. When I go though, usually, I try to wait until after a movie has been out for a few weeks. Because few people are in the theater and I can be away from those that are eating. There's a theater about 20 minutes from my home in Buffalo, where it's movies that are like, weeks away from being released on DVD (some even are already released on DVD) so almost nobody goes there. I love it because it's often a quiet theater and I can enjoy the movie. I agree with , though. One thing I've noticed that really helps is I'll eat when someone else is eating. Because my noises don't bother me, so I focus in on them and the thing I want to focus on. Though it doesn't help much in such a public place, but at the dinner table and such, it really does. Guest guest
Hi , I just can't believe that your symptoms are _exactly_ like mine! My wife likes to go to the movies but I just avoid it because of the sounds - it just becomes a totally negative experience. I feel such hatred towards people who eat or cough or rustle. They seem like the most selfish and self-indulgent people to me - completely inconsiderate. I guess that's how 4S twists everything around in my mind. I am generally happier if I am eating while others are eating. I am a fairly fast eater and so I have to take lots of little bites and chew slowly to time the completion of my meal so that it coincides with the end of everyone elses. Either that or bolt it down and then run off and do something else (very anti-social). Last night I put on my Sony noise cancelling headphones (purchased for airline flights) and they certainly reduced the tension for me. My little girls chomping was nearly bearable. I just had to explain to my kids why I was wearing big black headphones at the dinner table. I made myself two crackers and cheese last night to have with a glass of wine. When I sat down in my comfy chair my wife eyed off one of the crackers. I gave it to her and then everything went sour for me as she sat close to me crunching away on her cracker. She was eating it _sooo_ slowly that I eventually bursted out (a very common event) " Man!, how long does it take to eat a cracker?!!!! " She was typically offended. Another potentially pleasant intimate moment dashed upon the rocks of 4S! Keep up the good fight. Todd > > The movies are a nightmare to me.
