Don't laugh, but it helped me.. . . .Lost forty pounds this way: start eating lots and lots of apples. Firstly, the notion of starving yourself or denying yourself never works for people like us. So, the only hope, esxcuse this next phrase, is to "trick" your body into thinking it's just not hungry, which it won't be if you stuff it with healthy fiber and roughage. Apples are just sweet enough to be more satisfying than a stack of, say, celery or grapefruit. Eat one or two apples an hour before you normally eat, and it seems to make you want half as much as you ordinarily would. If you force yourself to eat an apply and a couple of carrots, chewing ALOT, then, tell yourself you can put anything on your plate (so you don't suddenly start craving the forbidden,) but you will find yourself eating just a small portion of those unforbidden but unhealthy foods. Hope that helps. Lots of apples, carrots, anything like that. Only when I told myself I MUST EAT apples, carrots, pots of steamed vegetable spritzed, not I CANNOT EAT etc etc, did I start to lose weight. Hope that helps! --meg

Hi , and welcome to the group. I recommend that walking be

your exercise of choice to start out with. I will be 52 very soon,

and I have lost almost 30 pounds this year by being committed to my

walking and cutting down a bit on my eating, trying to stick to

healthy food, etc. Start out with a distance you can manage and

work your way up to 4 to 5 miles per day.

As long as it's sunny out, you can walk in the cold. I used to live

in upstate New York and remember walking when there was lots of snow

on the ground. I just stuck to cleared sidewalks and roads when

possible.

Start using your lunch hour for walking. Eat a smaller lunch. Give

up the restaurant lunches and substitute walking. If it is bad

weather, find a mall to walk at. I try to walk at least 2 miles at

lunch. If it is good weather, I also walk 15 minutes on my morning

and afternoon breaks at work.

You could also get a treadmill or elliptical trainer for home use.

There are also DVDs such as Sansone Walk Away the Pounds you

can do at home.

There will always be an excuse to not exercise, but you will have to

overcome this and get committed.

Hey kevin!

Last June of this year I weighed 330lbs at 6'2 " tall I now weigh 265

and still losing. You can find a could program called " Fat Flush " at

Ivillage.com. It sounds like it may work for you. I also take about

1oz. of fresh ground flax seed per day to get my omega-3 oils in

balance. My wife and I walk about 1.5 miles per day. You might look

for a church that has a indoor basketball court. I think that 20 laps

around the court is a mile. Most of the churches in our area will let

you walk there for free. I don't recomend shopping malls due to the

food courts and hard concrete floorings. For what its worth Good Luck

Hi kevin, i'll tell you what helped me and see if it helps you.

i started an excercise log. i didnt set any hard goals for myself

because i would get terribly disapointed when i didnt make them.

what i started doing was going out and doing how much exercise i

could. i would walk a couple blocks, or ride a couple blocks until i

was tired. then next time i did it, i made sure to exceed what I had

done before. if i did 5 minutes the first time, I did 7 the next.

when I started on the ellipitcal i could only do 5 minutes. I did 5

minutes for 3 times in a row and worked my way to 7 and then 10 and 15

and now I can do it for 30 minutes.

you say you work as a retail manager, it wouldnt happen to be in a

mall would it? I know lots of people who walk the malls. No indoor

mall near me though.

I dont know what to say about the cold, the best thing when you cant

get to a gym is walking. do you think you could be a good candidate

for a treadmill or stationary bicycle?

I bought a small coffee grinder for about $13.00. It will grind

about 2 oz. at a time but I only do 1 oz. to keep it fresh.

I take about 1/2 oz. in the morning with a smoothy and 1/2 oz. in

the evenig with a cranberry dring that is part of the Fat Flush

Program.

Flax seeds are truly a " wonder " food

i grind mine in the food processor, but now my local store is selling

Bobs Red Mill ground and its barely a penny more than the whole,

i did read on a health website that the nution level in the flax seed

falls quickly once ground so that it is healthier to grind your own.

i drop mine in hot cereal, spaghetti, cold cereal and baked goods but

you do lose the B vitamins if you cook it.

Hello Keven,

You have already crossed the first bridge and that is admitting to

yourself that you need to do something. I too have a family and work

and no time in my life BUT...I never give in to any interuption that

keeps me from my workout! If you wind up dead you really will not have

time to excerise. How is your BP? LDL vs HDL? Seeing the type two I

would venture to guess that is something you will also need to get a

grip on. I have come from a point very much like yours but have fixed

everything without medication. Do you presently belong to a gym? I am

not a certified personal trainer but I am studing the ACE course and

would be willing to help you get started. Contact me off the list and

we can chat live as I am in RI but spend most of my life in SE MA. If

you do not belong to a gym you can get by with simple dumbbells and

accomplish anything the high tech machines can do. You really do need

to walk! A lot! Good luck and never lose hope. Actually making a choice
