Hi Guys

To Pia,

& Donna – Your frustrations with people who make the noises that

drive US ALL insane are NOT the ones with the problem, so encouraging everyone

to ‘Fuck them All’ isn’t really helping the people who send there love ones to

this site for them to read the messages and try to understand what they are

going through. It’s very counter productive and gives a negative attitude to

the whole group.

So

although I share your frustrations please remember:

THEY CANT HELP

THE NOISES THEY MAKE IN THE SAME WAY WE CANT HELP OUR REACTIONS TO THEM.

neil, i know you're right, just felt SO GOOD after years of this

to " just let off some steam " .............i do feel strongly though

about people who just have really bad table manners or lack of,

especially older children and adults. no problem with " little kids "

or babies because they don't know any better but i think as soon as

kids are old enough, say 3 or 4, you start teaching them. i know

that some of the other sounds i hear that drive me crazy, i have no

control over, i just wish we knew what makes " us " different from

people who 'can' tolerate. sincererly, donna

Agree with Neil. Let's keep this site "clean". There is already enough garbage on the web.

Well said, Neil.

I've always tried to make it a point not to think less of the

offending person. It can be so hard though; especially in a class room

or work setting, because you know who the offender is, and try at all

costs to avoid them. It makes it personal.

When you're in the mall, or in public transportation, and there is

someone loudly chewing and snapping gum, it is SO hard not to want to

rip the gum out of their mouth and smear it in their hair-- that's all

part of the anxiety that accompanies this problem. We can't help that

reaction, but we can slowly change our thought processes. We KNOW they

are just an innocent bystander. We know they have no idea they are

bothering us (the ones that give us trouble when we ask politely for

them to stop is another story). We know they are just enjoying a stick

of gum, or enjoying listening to their music a bit too loudly that we

can hear it through their headphones, they are just enjoying tapping

along to it-- they aren't TRYING to hurt us! And they have no idea

that they are doing it. Think those thoughts, rather than 'FUCK THEM

ALL!' They are just humans.

In your everyday life you could do bothersome things to others that

you don't know you're doing. Remember that :)

Stay positive!

" her daughter's eating habits are scraping the

silverware on the plate, chewing with a huge mouthful

of food even to

the point where it is spilling out and talking while

eating "

Neil, with full respect to you and your beliefs, this

daughtar most certainly CAN help her noises as she is

clearly acting as a pig who has absolutely no regard

to social etiquette whatsoever. All the overanalyzed

and pseudoscientific mumbo-jumbo aside, there is a

time to call a spade a spade and if you talk with a

full mouthful of food to such an extent that it is

spilling out your mouth while you are talking than you

are a pig. Furthermore her mother handles the

situation with callousness and insensitivity (not to

mention plain rudeness) by telling her daughter that

Donna has a mental problem. DONNA DOES NOT HAVE A

MENTAL PROBLEM BECAUSE SHE'S DISTURBED BY SOMEONE WHO

BEHAVES LIKE A PIG IN HER IMMEDIATE PRESENCE! In

fact, EVERYBODY SHOULD BE disturbed by such behavior.

If they were, it wouldn't exist in the first place.

At the same time however, people must realize that

this is not reality. For that reason, tolerance,

self-control and self-discipline must always be

stressed and adherred to.

I am brand new to this group, but I can say that I've

been coming to terms with my sensitivites for a full

15 years now (completely medication free I might add,

which is how I wish most people could do it but I

realize this isn't always the case). I've come to

realize more and more that this isn't an isolated

problem, it is simply one that the medical and

psychological worlds have failed to adequetly address

up to this point (perhaps hecause it simply wouldn't

be profitable to do so). But there is no shortage of

people who are bothered by certain stimuli (such as

clicking pens, poor eating habits, snoring, etc.

etc.). These are commonly just casually dismised in

conversation, or the person gets to a point where they

can't stand certain things anymore (are overwhelmed,

probably in life moreso than their handling of the

stimuli) and feel that they must have a major

malfunction. One example I have is of a young woman I

work with. She is taking medication for ADD. She

says that she needs this because she is " aware of

everything that goes on in her environment. " She says

she has always had this problem but she just " hides

it " well.

ADD seems to be the common diagnosis that people

consider themselves to have because it is a

conveniently broad diagnosis to make. However it

isn't precise. I know that the difficulties I've had

with sensitivity are totally independent of my

attention span. I can be walking down the hallway,

without paying attention to anything at all, but if

somebody walks by me repetitively clicking a pen it is

going to anger me and make me feel like grabbing the

pen and breaking it to dismiss the obnoxious stimuli.

Likewise, if I am in an ideal environment that is free

of distractions, auditory clutter, and the working of

undisciplined/unfocussed people whose energies are

poorly controlled, than I have no problem paying

attention to anything that I put my mind to. If I'm

in class and around such a stimuli it usually just

stresses me out to an extent, but not so much that it

detracts from my attention span to any large degree

(though I wear earplugs now to give me a little

distance from these stressors and serve as a " security

blanket " of sorts). In circumstances where it has

noticeably distracted me it has been due to the

accumulation of this stress and not direct attention

deficit itself.

Hi Chris

I agree

that the daughter in question has bad social etiquette and therefore a bad eating habit, but

at the end of the day it is the way she eats. Does she eat like that on

purpose? Truthfully I doubt it. It’s a bad habit that everyone (including

people without SSS) will get annoyed with and you are right she can stop eating

like that if she so chooses, I suspect she will once enough people make

comments on it outside her home environment. As for the mother, she has a

failure to understand and be compassionate towards her best friend.

I also agree

that ADD is a broad diagnosis to make for SSS sufferers and it’s not a “One

Size Fits All” disorder.

The only thing

that seems to make me anxious or angry is the SSS stuff, the rest of my world

is very calm and collected.

Then there are

some people who don’t mind eating noises etc at all, yet get anxious or angry

over things I would consider trivial and silly.

Maybe everyone

has a set level of anxiety and anger and we channel all of ours into noises,

where others disperse it over many other different things.

Oh well,

keep soldiering on everyone!

Neil

Perhaps you are right Neil but it felt good for us to let out some of our

frustrations on the people who have been told about these problems and do

not at least try to understand them.

" The only thing that seems to make me anxious or angry

is the SSS stuff, the rest of my world is very calm

and collected.

Then there are some people who don’t mind eating

noises etc at all, yet get anxious or angry over

That's a very astute observation. Although I

wouldn't assume that the rest of the world is calm and

collected simply because it appears that way. There

is one young woman I work with who is on some

medication for ADD because she says " she is aware of

everything that goes on around her " (as in she can't

block extra stimuli out). She has essentially told me

that she feels she's nuts but just hides it well. I

think a lot of these things do bother people but

instead of showing it they hide it.

An even better example I think is of my brother, who

had to sleep in a small room next to the room where my

father snores every night for many years. When I

went on vacation with my dad and brother a couple

years ago we all shared the same room. I as you can

imagine couldn't stand trying to sleep with that noise

in the environment. I had to go outside and try to

sleep in a hammock by the pool. I mentioned it to my

brother later and he said to me " I had to sleep in the

room next to that for years. You get used to it. "

From that I gathered that, even though my brother is a

person who has never shown any signs of this, his

initial reaction to it was the same as mine. At a

certain point however his mind/brain accomodated it,

probably by conscious decision as he knew (or at least

thought) their was nothing that he could do about it.

If I had been in that situation I would have handled

it differently I'd imagine. I probably would have

ended up sleeping on a sofa, eventually putting a mat

down somewhere downstairs.

I really believe something like that gives people an

initial reaction for a reason. Even if you accomodate

a noise such as heavy snoring, I can't imagine that

there still aren't times where it might bother a

person. Therefore a person with this particular

condition is better equipped to handle some situations

(or find potential solutions to some difficult

situations) whereas somebody with the condition of

accomodation is better equipped to adapt to certain

stimuli, which is better for sheer conveniency

although it is undetermined as to what the cumulative

affects of these stimuli may be when taken altogether

over a period of time.

I hear you all, and I know that many of you have more than just ONE

concern.............

My goal, though, is still to address mostly the auditory issues,

because I have seen, after ten years, that is you can regain your

equilibrium on the sound field, life is simply so much better, and

sound pervades every single environment..........

I do think this is really a huge area of medicine, and I know that

too many people suffer from ignorant medical providers, family

members, and many of you also blame yourselves for your problems,

which is so sad for me........to hear that people castigate

themselves because in some bio-genetic twist of fate, they end up

very sound sensitive.

On the screening side, I have been careful to contact people who wish

to join, read their comments, limit membership to this space where we

can feel safe to share very private feelings and situations.

I think that is quite important, and I still support the public

place, too, but we need our private room, too.

Just wanted to let you know that I am in total agreement. I would not share as openly as I have here on this YAHOO site, if it were not for the fact that this is a moderated site filled with others who either understand completely what I go through every waking hour of my existence, or those who do not directly suffer and attempt to cope with this affliction as well. I am 48 years

old.....and as a direct result of having this since age 11, I have been categorized AND treated as "difficult", "unreasonable", "uncooperative", "anti-social", "unmanageable", "crazy", "mentally deficient", "odd", "different" -- this list goes on and on and on......and it has been made up by those who love me such as family members, close friends, and co-workers. You can also throw those who do not love me in there as founders of this list as well -- educators, doctors, psychologists, bosses and yes, additional co-workers who were less caring. I have learned to keep this affliction to myself, for the most part.......and search for help on my own. It was just such searching that brought me to this forum -- a safe place to share the manner in which I am affected by this affliction with others who understand. Lo and behold, I never knew there was anyone else on the planet who was dealing with this, let alone

understood what it's like to have it!!!! A website is indeed, a good idea as it could offer more organization -- particularly if there were moderated boards where we could post on different subjects. BUT -- we do need our safe and private place to share.....which is VERY different from "getting the word out" to the public. Just my thoughts..... -- Pam
