crucial question when treating babies - when did the excema start? a lot of

them are sensitive to cows' milk-based formula. try replacing with soya or

goats' milk - both formulas available from health food shop, soya on

prescription if GP is helpful. some babies react to al of them. check how

they are sterilising the bottles as some react badly to chlorene, so replace

tap water with bottled and don't use milton etc. if it only started when

solids were introduced try avoiding some of them. i've seen lots of babies

react to baby rice - yes, really. also check washing powders and,

particularly, fabric softeners. " specially formulated for sensitive babies "

doesn't mean it suits all of them.

i treat babies with drop doses added to the bottle as it's easier than

infusions. treat the gut and the liver and always include chamomile and

viola tric. for itching. you can give the mother quite strong herbs and

really clean up her diet. and make sure she's taking enough EFAs - she's

probably trying to lose weight now and many women just give up all fats.

she needs all the hemp oil she can get.

your approach is good.

the wine and coffee probably aren't the best but don't take all her props

away - she's probably up half the night and exhausted. leave them till last!

baby eczema

Hi all,

A mother brought her 6 1/2 months old baby boy to me today. He suffers

from

eczema. He had large red plaques / patches on each side of his mouth. They

were dry and during the consultation did not seem to bother him too much.

These come and go and he gets them on other parts of his body (flexor

surface of arms for example or tummy, legs...). he scratches a lot

especially at night. During the consultation he also tended to scratch his

forehead and scalp even though there were no sign of redness.

Apart from a chickweed-base cream and a bath with oats and chamomile, I

was

going to prescribe an infusion for the baby and tinctures for the mother

(as

she is still breastfeeding him). I am planning to concentrate on calming

herbs for the boy and maybe have a more detox approach for the mother.

Questions:

Is it a valid / the best approach?

How much infusion should the boy take?

The mother drinks a couple of glasses of wine every other evening and

drinks

coffee? Could this have a detrimental / aggravating effect?

Should she stop using baby formula (SMA Gold) and replace it with

something

else? He has it about twice a day: some with his breakfast and a bottle at

night which the dad likes to give him. He has started eating solids

(home-made vegetable puree / banana + baby rice).

Any suggestions from someone more used to treating babies will be welcome

(as this is my first baby!!)

Cheers

When you say 'drop doses' for babies... how do you figure out your doses? I

have a perspective patient-- baby under 6 months with constipation. I

understand how to dose the mother, dietary and herbally, but still unsure as

to infant and child doses. An area of much interest for me... can you shed

some light on that for me? All input welcome from chat group members...

Hi Tami

usually do it off the top of my head rather than follow a set formula. look

at the size and general health of the baby and find a balance between a high

enough dose to work and a low enough dose to be tolerated. having said

that, i usually only use the gentlest, safest herbs and I'm sure there's no

difference between 5 and 10 drops of matricaria or trifolium in terms of

overload. generally I use, say, 5 drops per feed or 10 drops tds for little

babies (I know that's not the same thing but its easy for the parents to

do), rising to probably 2.5ml. tds for a toddler, depending on what I'm

trying to do and how they respond. for toddlers give in juice or whatever

they will swallow (resorted to coke for one child who refused all else - and

i'm sure that did more harm than my herbs ever could. gradually weaned him

onto other things. people don't know but are afraid of what they know they

don't know...), and usually * with* meals. sometimes its only necessary to

give one dose at night (thinking of toddlers with bothersome night coughs,

for instance)

no rules! except - don't use anything stupid (I have been known to use tiny

doses (5% of mix?) of ephedra when necessary).

I've found the dosage rules I learnt as a student to be totally irrelevant -

in fact i quickly forgot them. in particular I was taught to give reduced

doses to older people - in fact I almost always give higher doses as there's

more to do (while being sensible, of course.) if they're very frail you go

more carefully but you can't correlate that with age and you can't drain

oedematous legs with 50ml.tr. a week! (100ml Galium FE, at least 50ml.

Tarax.fol.FE and throw in some Crataegus and Aesculus...)

be confident and inspire the parents' confidence otherwise you're all on a

loser. the baby will get better.
