Hello all,

First of all, I am a skinny, out-of-shape, 17 year old newbie to this group who

is just looking for some advice on where to start. I would like to get in shape

to be healthy and also, mainly, to look decent. The look I want to try to shoot

for eventually, is like this guy's here:

Sabato, came out with a book on how he stays in

shape, but from what I read on amazon it's mostly just pictures of him naked

[(:|] ...which doesn't help me at all. The main thing I'm interested in is the

idea of " supersets " , where the workout is focused more on how long you do

weights than how heavy you're weights are. Is it possible to gain muscle mass

and tone this way? I'm a little skeptical.

Since I don't have ready access to a home/community gym either, I am also

interested in building muscle at home just with free hand weights and isometric

(is that right?) exercises.

Since I know genetics also play a role in this, I decided to take some

measurements of myself. They're all pretty close, maybe off a cm or two.

Total Height: 175.5 cm (5 foot 9)

Weight: 135 lbs

Neck: 44 cm (17 in)

Shoulder width: 104.5 cm (41 in)

Bicep circumferance: 29 cm (11.5 in)

Chest: 95 cm (37 in)

Waist: 73 cm (29 in)

Hips: 85 cm (33 in)

So, I'd like to eventually gain about 30 lbs in the near future. My only

limitations are money and access to a gym...I have plenty of time. If anyone

could give me some advice and maybe even tell my potential from the measurements

above...I'd be really thankful.

Hiya -

I note that you mention you're somewhat out of shape - this isn't particular

exact; do you mean 'unfit' (to use an even more inexact term :)) or a little

fat?

The first thing I would ask is what's your diet like because if you want to

put 30lb on you're going to have to eat something over and above your current

nutrient intake levels.

Now others may disagree but I would suggest two things:

[1] Food log - find out what you're eating and when - cut the rubbish out and

replace with something better

[2] As money is an issue add rice and stuff like various types of Dal - it's

cheap, nutritious and is a good start in getting additional calories.

As for training at home.

[1] Get several hessian sacks

[2] Fill with sand/ rocks whatever, to different weights

[3] Drag, throw, run (but do not kick :))and perfrom various other exercises

one might perform with a barbell or a kettleball...this will get you started.

[4] Need more resistance - add water to the sand etc...

Those would be my very basic, starting point, suggestions
