Guest guest
I have *never* experienced anything that can be described as 'afterglow' after cold or flu....... Want to talk about experiences about near death, during high pain or surviving slim odds- and we'd have alot to talk about. Guest guest
This topic deserves significant attention. If you use the search function at: http://www.chronicfatiguesyndromesupport.com/chat/forums/ind ex.cfm?start=1 & b=FM you'll find plenty of discussion on colds and how they affect the sick people on that board (You'll have to register to look at the posts). I don't know how familiar you are with this patient population, but it is pretty clear that it represents more than one condition. The susceptibility to, and response to, colds/flus highlights this as well as anything does. Some people (like me) can't remember the last cold or flu we got. Others catch them all the time. Some people are actually grateful when they catch a cold/flu because they feel so much better. Conversely, some people seem uniquely devastated by colds/flus. Presumably some of us have immune systems that are in an antiviral state (Th1-shifted, presumably) whereas others have immune systems that are hard-pressed to trigger such a state (Th2-shifted, presumably). But this is just an inference, open to scrutiny. Do let us know your thoughts on this. Below are some quotes from people who feel better during colds/flus. There's lots more where that came from. I didn't have the patience to look through all the threads (start by searching " colds " if you want to collect more testimony than I have supplied below). http://www.chronicfatiguesyndromesupport.com/chat/forums/me ssage.cfm?id=508515 & B=FM hoosiermama said Well I do still get sick 02/20/05 03:45 PM But when I am really sick my pain is way less. I also don't feel as " hyper " or anxious as usual. I get sick alot because I am around people at a nursing home and they are ALWAYS getting sick and giving it to me. I have to say though the pain is WAY less when I am sick, and thats a bit of a relief. HuggyMummy said Also on the rare occasion I DO get a full-blown infection I 'feel' great (apart from the attached symptoms of course) - it's as though my immune system finally has got something 'proper' to work on, instead of me! http://www.chronicfatiguesyndromesupport.com/chat/forums/me ssage.cfm?id=460297 & B=FM#460423 hoosiermama said This is WEIRD I am sick with a BAD cold but NO PAIN! 10/20/04 07:12 PM I don't know why, or how...but I am sick with a bad cold, and PAIN FREE! I can not beleive this! I mean yeah, I feel like crappola, but NO PAIN??? Its been 2 days and my pain has subsided! It feels good. la_star1 said I had a really bad flu in February and had a fever of 101. I thought it was the weirdest thing but I was completely pain free. foxglove9922 said For me a cold is not necessarily a bad thing. I tend to feel more normal with a cold other than the unpleasant side effects of the cold. Ranger said I have experienced this phenomenon of having a cold and not feeling the fibro so much. myaeggi said I have the same phenomenon hoosiermama! Everyone thinks I'm crazy when I say that my pain is significantly less when I have a cold. patchwork said I feel much better when I have a cold! It's as if the immune system has something else to work on. Also I feel FANTASTIC the day before I get really sick!! I have so much energy and feel almost normal! Guest guest
Now that I think of it Scha of this board felt reduced pain while having a pneumonia. He will probably fill you in on that.
Guest guest
Matt: Your quotes indicate that there appears to be a good-feeling prequel, duration AND afterglow. It would be very interesting, to know what the WBC/RBC profiles and /or CD4 were for these people - i.e. normal baseline and what changes there were if they were feeling better - plus- becuase they had symptoms of a cold - their immune systems HAVE to be responding. I wonder if the chamical by-products of the immune system fight the virus is what reduced the pain. Gotta be a hint.
