Guest guest
: From the book " The Healing Nutrients WIthin " , by Braverman M.D., et al.: (He is talking here mainly about epilepsy, but I figure that's pertinent, because it's definitely one of the major types of seizure disorders.) p244: Aging greatly alters the metabolism of the brain. The enzyme GA decarboxylase, which forms GABA from GA (glutamic acid), decreases markedly. Manganese supplements can correct the problem of reduced GABA synthesis in aging brains (Denman et al., 1984; Rajeswan and Radha, 1984; Lai et al., 1984). p248: " Taurine, an anti-convulsant amino acid, is effective in epilepsy because it increases the breakdown of glutamate to GABA. " p249: " Monaco and colleagues have found as many as ten amino acids to be low in the spinal fluid of epileptic patients. Yet, the overwhelming evidence suggests that most epileptics have decreased taurine, GABA and glycine, with increased aspartic acid and glutamic acid (GA). GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter, and failure in its synthesis or loss of its action promotes excitatory neurotransmitters. This situation occurs when the enzyme, glutamate decarboxylase, which makes GABA from GA, is reduced. Glutamate decarboxylase is a vitamin B-6 dependant enzyme, and it is nottsurprising that drugs that inhibit B6 are potent seizure producing agents. Extra vitamin B-6 and manganese can be used as one way to elevate GABA in the brain. One major study of GABA and B-6 has been down; 50 percent of the 699 patients given these supplements showed improvement (Karmrin, 1961). " Sorry , my motor is running down, but it' s great book, and Dr. Braverman has a practice, I believe in NY. Perhaps he would consult with your doctor. There's a ton of info on glycine, taurine, gaba, and other " calming " amino acids which influence neurotransmitter activity. I take GABA sometimes, and find that it does help, but get an itchy, hot feeling if I take more than 500mgs at a time. Glycine helps clear toxins and chemicals from the liver... Hope this helps.
