Glad to see a post from you. And don't worry about TaeBo taking a back seat. Guest guest
Hi Elly, welcome. I'm a new/recent member, too and to be honest, I never wanted to have to be a part of a support group for something related to my child's health. Yet, my husband and I are so grateful to have found ISOP and this group, the parents here are intelligent, passionate and amazing people. Our current issue- we are still doing trial and error to avoid getting the gray sweater thing from getting pee on the edge and "wicking up". A small price to pay to have him in the cast, but I'm afraid he'll end up smelling like a small homeless person. We've done duct tape at the bottom edge of the cast itself, and are now tring Poise pads inside the diaper, which is helping with legs leaks- he's skinny- but trying to put a sanitary pad up the front of the cast doesn't seem to be working. It falls out or irritates his skin- the cast is tight, so it's hard to push the pad up his tummy much (It's Always Maxi with wings). Anybody have any other thoughts on keeping the sweater edge dry? How do you even wash it without 2 people? (One to hold the child from wriggling and getting the cast wet, while the other pulls and washes/dries)? Does anyone have this down? Thanks! Guest guest
Nick and Heidi, I have no issues with leaky diapers....I know knock on wood...but it's true. Now I have to say that I guess I sort of cheat..because Jack still does not sleep through the night I change Jack a lot during the day. I put his diaper on and then we have a routine where I stand him up on the changing table facing me and then he puts his arms around my neck like he is giving me a big hug (it's nice) and then I tuck it in the back...he is sort of leaning forward so the cast allows you to tuck the diaper up. I have some neoprene that I can mail to you. Darrell, one of the father's n the group covers the cast in neoprene, you can ck out his son's pics. I did a version of this for Jacks first cast. This cast I did it on the bottom/front to protect against any issues. It really does work great at making the cast a little more water resistant. Feel free to email me off line with your address and I can mail some to you. ~Krista From: elly.doran <elly.doranyahoo (DOT) com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Hello everyone! To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 6:49 AM I am a new member to this group. Guest guest
Hi Krista, Thanks. you, that is a really sweet idea about the hug to tuck the back of the diaper in! I'll try that. We got a bit of neoprene in the kit that we have to try. We'll check out the Darrell's pictures, is that in a story on the website? Sorry about Jack not sleeping through the night! Bexon woke up about 4 times last night, not sure if it's teething or adjusting to the cast- not being about to turn over like he used to. He's still working on getting his balance all the way back- he's toppled a handful of times from being top-heavy- and he's frustrated that he can't bend down and collect leaves like he used to. He loves leaves. He can get on his knees in the park, but it's harder to get back up without something to pull up on. It hasn't been two weeks yet, to be honest it's been hard for us because (perhaps) we have some anger at the doc (s?) who I will not name here, who didn't tell us he had a potentially very serious conditon earlier. In our case, he may have been in the cast months or even a year less, had we gotten him to SLC 2-4 months sooner. Big sigh. On the positive side, we know Bexon will get the motor skills stuff down, soon, he's a very active little boy who runs like the wind and walked early. We should definitely get our boys together once Bex has adjusted a little bit more! My email is Heidinick@.... Guest guest
Hi Heidi, Awe, that stinks! I too would be mad or furious had that been told to me. That's a huge amount of time and something the dr's should have mentioned. It's good you're in the right place now though. You guys will get through it and who knows, maybe Bexon will do phenominal in the cast and bounce back quicker than expected. Keep me posted. Best wished to you all. Guest guest
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the support of everyone here. It's a relief to be able to discuss anger and frustration. Once you find out about the true situation and are waiting for the first casting appointment, the wait is excruciating. We were so incredibly fortunate that we got a cancellation and our casting date was moved up. We're so, so grateful for so many amazing people who've helped us, and already saved our child's life. Oh, only that little ol' thing. I joked to Nick that "It takes a village to save Bexon". Still, after the cast is on, your brain really does start to process all of the possible outcomes, the "whys?" and the people who may have delayed your child's proper care... and in the process, threatened his health/life. It's all pretty big stuff. I experienced grief when my father died (by suicide) only 4 months after Bex was born (they never met). I recognized the stages/feelings of grief while beginning to process this (shock, sadness, anger, feelings of helplessness, physical symptoms...). You can have all of the philosophy and knowledge at hand, but the feelings are still there. You almost don't know where to put them, especially when you need to smile and hug and love your young child. I have so much respect for all of the parents who have gone through and/or are going through this. I'm realizing, of course, that the anger part has to be channeled for good, 'cause you just can't go around in polite society and bop someone in the head with a very large object. It's just not done. Well, that's not true, it is done, but it's frowned upon. (ha!) Thank you for saying the first two weeks are the hardest. It is already getting much better. Thank you for also talking about the fact that it's a journey. It all helps us as we begin it, with the belief that anything is possible. Big hugs to all- stay strong!
