Dear Lucy

I also put together a lovely business plan, using skills gained over my 10

years in the graphic design industry. They said it was fine but only offered

me a £1000 overdraft facility. If after six months the business was working

well, they said I might then be offered a loan. This is not what I had

understood as a " startup loan " , this is an " if your business is successful

we'd like a bit of it " loan. I never formally turned them down, but have

bought herbs and bottles using a credit card (probably not the best idea)

to start a market stall. When I start to get some patients I'll quickly make

out an order to Proline, who offer interest-free credit, a 10% discount on

the first order, and no payments need be made for the first two months.

I may be an idiot for not taking up the bank's offer (NatWest), but I am

happy to have the freedom to cock things up in my own special way without

having to jump through their hoops or pay the costs of a business account. I

don't have a partner or family who will cushion me financially, but the

money from doing reception and teaching work helps. One of these days, even

the market stall may make me some money.

We were all told to make out business plans and approach the bank during our

courses, but sometimes you just have to try to make the herbal thing work

any way you can. Best of luck with it all, and keep taking nervines.

All the best, Mala Bissoon
