I had the following query from a local homeopath and I wasn't sure how to

answer -any comments?

" Also is it OK for my sister - she had a kidney transplant last year and has

lupus and consequently she is on cholesterol and blood pressure tablets,

anti rejection drugs and steroids. That's all!! I know that some herbs are

not safe so wanted to check with you first. "

The sister is 39.

Graham,

Some schools of thought believe Echinacea contraindicated in auto-immune

disorders and in transplant treatment scenarios; so, if you say OK and

there are any complications re: health, guess who will get the blame!...

.... or maybe not see a herbalist. Transplant patients are the one group of

people we perhaps can't treat. Herbal medicine v. immunosupressives.

There is a case for using Echinacea in autoimmune disease, according to

Kerry Bone, but it is contraindicated in patients taking immunosuppressant

drugs except for short-term therapy.
