Some more general info, maybe someone can find better descriptions

The Immunologic Basis of Allergic Diseases

http://microbiology.medicine.dal.ca/people/hoskin/hypersen.htm

hypersensitivity or allergy is the result of exaggerated and inappropriate

immune reactions that are damaging and sometimes fatal to the

host, i.e., induce some form of pathology. Individuals undergoing these

reactions are termed to be “hyper” sensitive to a particular antigen

because their immune system is reacting in a damaging rather than protective

fashion.
