Guest guest
Hi ,Good to hear from you!!We just started Keira in preschool this month. We had kept her out since we didn't want her getting sick with the casting and anesthesia. We are taking a cast break and Keira will get her brace next Tuesday. So, I thought it was a good time to start her. She hasn't gotten sick, but I have!!One issue that we had trouble with was the bathroom and trying to find someone who would help her. Many facilities didn't want to deal with this, so I kept looking until I found someone I was comfortable with. We also sent a raincoat for Keira to wear when they use the sand/water table. They were happy to accommodate her.It sounds like the number of staff is a good number, I would meet with them to see if they are comfortable helping/dealing with your concerns and your son's needs. (I know they have to 'take them' related to the ADA requirements, but who wants to put your child with someone who isn't happy helping?)LizSubject: Help - Need advise for pre-schoolTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, May 21, 2009, 12:30 PM What advise can you all give me about chosing an appropriate preschool class for my son , turning 3, in a cast and not walking (also with hearing impairment)? Guest guest
My son was only 13 months old when his cast was applied, but we enrolled him in a preschool/daycare that is half special needs kids and half typical kids when he was 16 months old. He was a lot younger than your son, so the teacher student ratio was 1 teacher, 2 aids, and 13 kids. But, again, these were kids that were 13 months - 2 years old. We showed them how to diaper him with the cast and just gave them instructions about not letting him participate in sand or water play (and also keep him away from other kids who might be playing with sand, etc. They were really great about it and we had no problems whatsoever. But your situation is slightly different since your son also can not walk and has a hearing impairment. I am surprised they wouldn't choose a special needs preschool for him. Of course that might be because in your area the special needs preschools have kids with a lot of cognitive issues and if your child is cognitively on target it might serve him better to be with the regular kids. I would just work with the preschool teachers to make sure they understand his specific needs. If you have good preschool teachers, it might work out well. Now that my older son is 4, I don't notice as many illnesses going around the classrooms. But your son will likely get more illnesses than he does now at home. Guest guest
Hi , My son Finn was just assessed for the school district preschool. He qualified for Speech and ortho reasons. We are just going to send him one day a week until we know if he can handle it and then when he is four he can attend more. The last thing I want is for him to be sick all the time. Are you thinking of full time? I will be curious how it goes if you decide to send you child. I felt sick thinking about it!! Too much worry, although I am sure it will be fine. Guest guest
Hi , We've had a problem getting Noelle into Pre- school for 3 year olds simply because of the potty-training. The teacher and aides won't assist her in the bathroom and she won't have the flexibility to clean herself from behind if she has a bowel movement. We were told that she might be eleigilbe for a personal aide through the public school system in our town, but we haven't crossed that bridge yet.... You might try calling your local school system and asking about that service..... Guest guest
Hi , I'm chiming in because we just did our first tour of a pre-school today for our son Bexon, who will be starting in fall 2010. This place was great, but had a lot of sand in one area, and some water play was going on (kids building small "rivers" in the sand). I want to ask the group what they suggest, just in case he's not out of casts by then? I don't think the teachers can keep them out of the sand, during hours of outdoor time, and how do you stop all the other kids from getting them wet? Thanks in advance for your help! -Heidi (Bexon's Mom) Subject: Help - Need advise for pre-schoolTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, May 21, 2009, 12:30 PM What advise can you all give me about chosing an appropriate preschool class for my son , turning 3, in a cast and not walking (also with hearing impairment)? Guest guest
I'm responding to my own post, because I hadn't read the others when I sent it. Where we live, all pre-schools are "fee", even public ones, unless you make a very low income. Even the public ones are $900 a month, for a full day, and the private ones go up to around 1200, so it's all quite pricey. I'm wondering if our child is still in the cast at that point- very likely in our case- if I can't do pre-school becuase of potty and water/sand issues. Any thoughts? Is pre-school crucial for development? It sounds early for us to be thinking of this, but other parents tell us we're altready behind- many of these schools in our area already have waiting lists. Guest guest
Hi Heidi,Did you go to preschool? I know I didn't or my husband. Or either sister.First off you I am a mother that plans to home school her children and I also plan to do a home school preschool starting in September.I don't think Bexon will fall behind if he is NOT in preschool. My thoughts on our kids that are in a cast or brace 23 hours a day-----IF you are blessed enough to be able to stay home with your child, then take full advantage of that. I know there are many parents that must work and I can totally understand that. By all means do your very best to find a preschool that can accommodate your child. My thoughts....bottom line preschool is not crucial.TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, Texas is currently in a brace at night.Casting 14 months. Guest guest
Hi Tasha, I did go to pre-school in small town Hays, KS, and the only thing I remember is that we had outdoor time in the yard and everybody wanted to get to the big, wooden rocking horse first! Oh, and that I had a crush on a little boy named Jeff, who looked pretty much exactly like my husband (as a child). Oh, the acorn (that becomes the tree) is strong! ; ) Thank you for your thoughts, we'll keep investigating our options. Some of these parent in LA are a bit crazy when it comes to pre-school, I think the kids need to play and socialize and be loved. Guest guest
Hi, I just went through this. When trying to find a preschool for I explained his situation to the director and she did not do much to reassure me about sending him there. They have a "tactile table" that from time to time has sand in it. will be in one or two more casts so I suggested, until he is in a brace, to put something other than SAND. Her response was something along the lines of "I can't promise you anything." I hung up and thought about it and realized that I was mad. If he had a peanut allergy they wouldn't be eating peanut butter or playing with peanuts! Long story longer, I spoke with the teacher and SHE assured me there would not be sand until could be around it safely. She said she will help him with getting the pants up and down if he needs it. We will work on it this "skill" summer. I have found if you can speak directly with the teachers they know more of what is going on in the classroom. Where we live preschool is only 2 and a half hours at a time (only 2 days a week). I just hope he doesnt have to poop during preschool hours. They will figure out what they need to do if he does! Sorry, not much info, More of a vent. Good luck!! Guest guest
Hi Jill, No, that IS good info! Just like at Dr's offices, the doc or school director may not be the one to talk to (only) about this, the nurses can be a great help- and I have the highest respect for good teachers. I think it can also be a feather in the cap for the school, to point out how they have some special needs children- if that's the right way to put it. It's diversity, which is very attractive to a lot of parents in our area. Guest guest
So true, but our knees get more tired from all that squatting and chasing the toddler in the park! ; ) -Heidi From: McDowell <juliegrace777@ yahoo.com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Help - Need advise for pre-schoolTo: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Thursday, May 21, 2009, 12:30 PM What advise can you all give me about chosing an appropriate preschool class for my son , turning 3, in a cast and not walking (also with hearing impairment)? We were assessed by our school district for special needs, and they are recommending a pre-school starting Aug. 12 (so soon), with regular kids...about 22 of them, one teacher and 2 aids. Guest guest
I have always thought that once they reach 3 years old their spines are harder to corect.. My friend's daughter who is 4 was told by Chicago Shriners that she was too old. Where do you go for casting? To: infantile_scoliosis@...Sent: Friday, May 22, 2009 3:52:25 PMSubject: Re: Help - Need advise for pre-school I'm not sure what you mean. The Dr.'s said they wanted to cast him so we did. I didn't realize there was an age limit. I know that it's best to cast when they are younger but he didn't have it then or at least if he did we didn't know it. They are telling us that they will try this with him and it's possible that he will wear the cast for up to five years. We'll find out more on Tues. when we go for a cast change how far he's come w/ correction. There were able to go from 56 degrees in before casting to only 37 degrees in cast so we're so hopful that this will help. I guess I didn't realize we were so rare in casting this late. Have you not heard of any other children being casted this late? Thank you so much for the question and for your concern. This board has been such a sorce of strength and encouragement not to mention the limitless information. Our son Logan, who is five years old, is currently in preschool. He only has a few days left because the school year is almost over (he goes to our small town school district preschool which has busing and it is all FREE!!)He goes four days a week for three hours in the afternoon.> They do have sand on the playground and water tables in the classroom. Logan understands that he is not allowed to go near those things and the teachers also know he can't so they keep him away. We haven't had a single problem and he LOVES preschool. I don't think I'd dream of asking a school to remove something just because my child can't be near them. I don't think that would be fair to the other kids who can play w/ them. Logan has adjusted and doesn't care that he can't do those things..he finds something he can do and enjoys it!! Kids adjust FAR better than any adult ever would! The other kids, at first, were very interested in his cast (always wanting to look at it and touch it) but now the thrill has worn off and they don't pay attention to it at all. He runs and plays just as well as the other kids. The teacher keeps us posted but hasn't said there has been one problem so far. He'll start kindergarten in the fall and we've already spoken w/ the> teacher but don't expect a problem there either. My suggestion would be to keep searching for a preschool until you feel 100% comfortable w/ the answers you are receiving and the facility. You know your child better than anyone and will know when you've found the right match!! > Good Luck w/ your search and please let me know if I can help you in any way at all!!> Sherry> Mom of Logan, age five> In his first cast and about to change into second cast on May 27> > > What advise can you all give me about chosing an appropriate preschool class for my son , turning 3, in a cast and not walking (also with hearing impairment)? Guest guest
Yes! Mothering and stress have added years to my look and the c-section and breastfeeding some sagging in places that I don't even bother to look at anymore! LOL But I still am desperate for a second one! Maybe that's sleep deprivation talking, but I really do! Guest guest
I agree! If you look at the "curriculum" for the 3 year old program, it's all stuff that you can easily do at home..... Stuff you probably already do! I like that pre-school, even part-time, teaches them some social skills and some structure, but all those other little classes teach that too! Noelle turns 3 Sept 29th just before the cutoff of October 1rst, so I feel a bit pressured to make a decision.... But I think my gut tells me that I should just enroll her in one or two fun activities and wait for PRe-4...... That music class sounds like a lot of fun! Noelle would love that too!
