Guest guest Posted June 7, 2004 Report Share Posted June 7, 2004 The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that the metabolite Disulfide, that is responsible for the garlic taste and body odor also attracts ants. It could be an odor that is found in their preferred food sources? It is a common substance in organic matter and living bodies, as well as decaying matter. I have not noticed my DMSO use attracting the fire ants that are all around our house. I don't use pesticides on them, I just live with them. If they get too overwhelming I have put an insect growth regulator on them, ant hormone, that is non-toxic -- it slows the mound down somewhat. I use DMSO a lot, and live on a farm with lots of insects. So if your use attracted ants it is possible that they are just behind your walls in the wood work? I hate to think that but it could be a good thing that you know to check on it now? Nutmeg and Cinnamon are ant replellent. I have used both the spices and the essential oils, after a deluge of four days that drove the fire ants into the house to escape the rising ground water. If you find out where they are coming from let us know. Perhaps it is a good test for carpenter ants! Who knows. But when I checked Hulda , I think she said that borax was good for all insects except ants, and that you should use vinegar for those. So when I noticed ants marching up the outside of the house wall, I sprayed with that, and have only just remembered them now, so it must have worked! No other insects though, so that is reassuring. I have used strong Borax solutions to kill fire ants when they were swarming on my patio. They died pretty quick.
