I also know a family who live there who do healthy living (nobody on the spectrum, they just eat well). Feel free to email on fintansdad@... Europe is crap for labeling of food compared to the UK but Swtizerland has improved a lot in the past @2 years but France is still terrible. We have been GFCF or SCD for the past 8 years. SCD was pretty difficult so most of Finn's food at that time was made from raw ingredients..... real cooking ! GFCF is easier as both of the 2 main supermarkets Coop and Migro carry GFCF ranges, Coop has the better range including pasta, breakfast cereals, biscuits etc and both have a Bio range of meat, fruit, veg etc There are many health food shops that carry different gfcf/sf products but not very cheap. There are also a few Japanese small supermarkets that carry some nice rice based stuff that is clearly labeled. If you are thinking of moving to this area I would be more concerned about the schools than the food ! There is very limited support here and it is expensive ! The Swiss/French have more of an institutional approach to disability than North America or the UK (as a sweeping generalisation !) Guest guest Posted July 10, 2008 Report Share Posted July 10, 2008 Hi , Yep, I rember emailing with you in Germany ;o) To be honest I wasnt even thinking of E numbers etc, more the basic labeling of food containing nuts, dairy, gluten etc. Very little in Switzerland/France is labeled, I am always shocked/envious when I walk around Sainsburys or Tesco in the UK and see the great specialist food available with clear labeling of basic allergens. The Swiss education system tends to put any disability in holding pens regardless if ASD, CP, retardation, severe physical, etc. When Finn was first diagnosed, the young neurologist told us to look after him for as long as we could at home and then they would institutionalise him. The International School in Geneva finally has 24 places in Learning Centres against a total campus population of 4,000+ !! But it is a start that we have fought hard to get. Finn is one of the lucky 24, very autisitic and sadly gets little in return for the double school fees we get charged (@Chf50k/year) and to be honest the school would be happy to push him out but dont dare as my wife is on the School Board. Several kids already have been asked to leave this year as the school cannot cope, I think their goal is to have 24 mildly dyslexic kids in the ELC paying double fees ! We even had to fly our own ABA Superisor in from NY to do Finn's school IEP and train staff. The English School of Geneva openly admitted it was very focused on academic excellence and entry to UK public schools so didnt want to provide special education. Other Geneva schools such as the Institut International in Lancy have also kicked out 'difficult' spectrum children of some of our friends. There is one ASD school mear Morges called Fedea that is run using Teacch methods, but places are limited and its Chf80k/year. Obviously it all depends how severe your child is and how much support they need. Totally agree with you about Nth American/UK kids having the most developmental issues when you look at an average International School classroom, there must be a link with vaccine schedules and genetics. (There was an increasing trend to get rid of, in their view, stragglers and burdensome children.) The same school caused a girlfriend of mine a lot of misery by confirming placement for her 2 kids prior to admission and then after they had moved lock, stock and barrel from the States to Germany were told the children could only be admitted to the classrooms if each child had his/her own coach at parent's expense. At 30,000 D.M. each ( 20,000 pounds Sterling together), the additional tuition fees added up to a colossal amount to pay. I know quite a few parents where the children with any difficulties were simply not allowed in. Mind you once they were in and were dxed with problems like mine was, did they ever put the pressure on for ritalin and the like. I had a mild suspicion that the drugs companies had encouraged employement of certain stooges there. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw the school's occupational therapist, (also the wife of the American Consul-if you please) for some strange unknown reason was asked to speak at a Ritalin marketing launch conference in the same city. (I was there just curious to see how they were intending to foist these psycho drugs on our kids-pretty scarey conference, let me tell you. I think the G.P who gave me her admission ticket to get in there was half-hoping I would sign my daughter on the drugs wagon so that she could get a commission-same GP who flies all over Europe to theatres etc courtesy of Merck- My goodness they are all on the make...dreadful-absolutely morally bankrupt!!)) I just about gagged when I saw her on the stage with her husband sitting in the front row. What was a member of the U.S diplomatic force doing at a conference like that with his wife on stage. I felt sick to my stomach as you can imagine what my thoughts were, collusion of industry, politics and the school executives to keep our kids unwell. I still feel sick thinking about it.
