Are there any sort of online tests to self-diagnose OCD? I know I'm fairly anal

retentive, but wouldn't normally think of myself as OC, except that some of the

things that Monk does make perfect sense to me.

Thanks!

I totally would agree with this inclination from what I have observed, seen and felt. Thanks for bringing this up! And you are right, very slight...

Subject: The link between HYperacusis and OCD

One contribution I can make is that many people who have forms of

hyperacusis, including this one, often display tendancies for

obsessive compulsive behaviors.

OCD has been displayed in many subtle and overt forms: it can be

comuplisively attending to something, unable to 'leave it alone' in

our thinking, our body habits, our environment, yes, even our

computer behaviors, i.e., checking emails repeatedly! OCD can also

show itself in attending to body functions or symptoms, such as sound

sensitivity to particular noises.....often, I do believe, these cases

are mores subtle than the far out examples of people touching things

over and over again, or checking to see if the door is locked....a

dozen times!

OCD has also been linked in research to the area of the brain that

has been linked with auditory pathology, including tinnitus and

hyperacusis, the limbic system. It is speculated that a viral

invasion of this part of the brain happens in some cases, but this is

still not certain.

IN any case, many people who have hyperacusis often find themselves

with a form of OCD, in a sense, and rather than the physician

prescribing anti-anxiety meds, often anti-obsessive compulsive meds

work better. Like klonopin. Or others.

If you are reading this board, and you are interested in this

treatment option, meet with your MD and try to get referred to a

psychiatrist who knows something about OCD. Then you can try out

some pharma-chemicals to see if the magic combination might be

available to you. I would estimate that perhaps 25 % could find some

relief in this way.............without much trouble. Even low doses

of meds can work miracles for the right person who suffers from these

TWO conditions: hyperacusis AND OCD.

: I can answer that but it didn't help me out too much. I googled OCD some time ago and found some websites, self-tests, etc. for it and found out I was not OCD. Then I called one of the OCD organizations and talked it over with them; they said there was no way I was OCD. I was doing this as I was with a horrible HMO and the Doctor I had was part-owner which was really a problem, conflict wise. When I requested anything in terms of referrals, she pulled every trick out of the book to intimidate me to 'go away " so she wouldn't have to pay for it. Finally, she resorted to telling me I was OCD. I wanted to find out if I was.

Postcript: I changed Doctors, have a nice one now who doesn't insult me and when she said that self breast exams were " excessive " and that I had to OCD, that's when I really left her practice!

There is NO WAY to tell if someone is OCD on the internet or in a phone

conversation.

You must seek advice from a qualified medical professional, preferably

a psychiatrist who is able if needed to help with medications.

Please do not put any stock into online surveys or someone's secretary

or even your family physician...........this is an extremely

specialized area of medicine and mental/psychological expertise.

Marsha,

I first went to a hypnotist, who then sent me to a neuropsychologist.

I think because he thought I might have ADD. The Neuro sent me to a

Psychologist to have some tests run. I am scheduled to have MMRI -2

I think it is? Will this tell me if I am OCD? He said it would take

about 2 hours. He also wants me to take another test thats about 30

min. Not sure what the name is.

I read on the Hyperacusis Network that sometimes an MRI can make our sound sensitivity MUCH WORSE - if you have to have it - be sure the ear plugs are firmly in place....mine weren't and it was awful! BUT at least I found out that I didn't have a Brain Tumor! Hallelujah!bambam33635 wrote: Marsha, I first went to a hypnotist, who then sent me to a neuropsychologist. and I want to add that the best thing, too, is to wear some ear muffs. Some facilities have them but I take my own, Thunder 29's as recommended at one time by Dan Malcore from the Network. From Southern California, I think. Earplugs don't help me too much with MRI's and I had such a horrible set-back last year from two mri's, I was screwed up for months. That's when I met Marsha who helped me get through those months!
