Hi,

I'm a 24 year old software engineer from Chicago who's pretty athletic

and loves to cook and bake. I stumbled upon Nourishing Traditions

from two different paths. One is that I was reading some about

sustainable agriculture and talking to the people at a biodynamic CSA

that I'm a member of. I started looking into biodynamics and tripped

over the name Trauger Groh. And then I eventually found the WAPF

web-site. At the same time I was trying to understand some of the

sports-nutrition things that I'd been reading on the web, and

eventually hit WAP from that perspective too.

I confess to being a bit of skeptic on some of Fallon (and Enig's)

ideas, but I've been really intrigued by the parts about the

differences between modern and " traditional " food processing and

preservation techniques. So, mostly, I've been trying to incorporate

the techniques discussed in Nourishing Traditions into my cooking

repetoire at the same time as I read cookbooks about " authentic "

cooking (mostly Middle Eastern and Indian, although I'm trying to

understand how to cook East Asian food, but I'm not doing to well).

This has been really interesting because I've learned a lot about

various cooking traditions that you can't ever find in cookbooks.

Anyways, I'm glad to have found this group. It should be interesting

to see what other people are doing and how they've incorporated

Fallon's insights into their cooking (and living)

Start by looking up http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/oehas/mold.html

" Is Indoor Mold Contamination a Threat to Health? " , by Harriet M. Ammann,

Ph.D., D.A.B.T., Senior Toxicologist for Washington State Department of

Health, Olympia, Washington. For an older reference, read Leviticus chapter

14, and remember that the word plague or leprosy used to describe a house is

the same mold you have. It was recognized as a problem 3000 years ago.

Hopefully you can convince your husband and your doctor that you are on to

a very real problem. Ask your husband if you and he felt better when you

were away from home on vacation? Maybe that will convince him you might be

right. Mold may not be the cause of all your problems, but the situation you

describe certainly suggests mold is a major factor. And since many molds are

immunosuppressants, other illnesses can take this opportunity to make you

sick.

You mention that your husband is tearing out icky black drywall. Hopefully

he is at least wearing a HEPA filter mask, and washing his hands and face

quite often. He should also be spraying a little dilute Clorox on everything

and bagging it in heavy platic before hauling it through the house to

prevent spreading the mold spores whereve they haven't already gotten. Mold

removal can make an already bad situation worse if not done right.

Hello:

I joined this group a couple of days ago and have been poring over the

info all of you have provided. I have been " sick " for two years and have had

severe neurological symptoms for the past year, along with 'growing' stuff

on my head-neck-back, chronic fatigue, burning eyes and a general not

feeling good along with a head that feels numb with intense pressure. It's

not really a headache but I suppose you could call it that. My doctors keep

telling me nothing is wrong with me, but of course I know different. Our

roof has been leaking for about 3 years and my son fixed two roofs on the

lower level and replaced the insulation and drywall. I had a mold test taken

by sample method that showed the whole gambit of allergens along with

mycotoxins 'penicillum, alternaria, fusanium, trichoderma and stachbotrys'

and aspergillus as a pathogen. This was from a test taken before the 2 roof

repairs, I am waiting for the results of another sample test taken after the

repairs but visually they looked the same or perhaps worse. We had another

room that leaked in our second story, also for 3 or more years. My husband

is tearing out the icky black drywall from that ceiling and has found that

the boards within are rotting.

I live in Michigan. Could anyone tell me where I could find information

that I could take to my doctor and show to my husband who doesn't believe

the extent of the problem? By the way, he has been experiencing upper

respiratory symptoms off and on and I am quite worried about him also. Thank

you for any help anyone could give me.

This is a wonderful group and I thank God that I found it.

~~~hugs~~~ from Darlene
Subject: My Intro
I switched doctors about a month ago. He did a liver panel and my alkaline was
134
which is just a little high. The norm is 42 to 126. One reason for high
alkalines is
clogged biliary ducts. Two years ago it was normal.
Don't put too much stock in " norms " , they are just that, and few people
are normal.
I had no more pain since the Vioxx incident until about a week ago. I don't
know if it
is the power of suggestion from the high alkalines reading or if I'm
developing
stones, but the pain is there sometimes.
I will go for a follow-up with the doctor in a couple of weeks, but would like
to do all I
can in the meantime. I am taking lecithin again and that helps a lot. I have
been pain
free since Saturday night. I haven't taken it regularly because I can't
remember to
take it until I have pain.
Taking it before pain may keep you from having pain. Put it somewhere
somehow that you have to avoid it not to take it.
Lori, you mentioned ground flax seed. Is this the same as milled flax seed? I
just
recently purchased it in an effort to increase my essential fatty acid intake.
This was
before the gall bladder pain. I don't know how to use it. Any suggestions?
Always grind it yourself. Flax will oxidize and go rancid quickly after
the kernel is violated. Try it in your steel cut Irish oats (yum).
Dave and Lori,
Can you tell a difference in how you feel after taking ground flax seeds for a
while?
Kathleen, I'm still at the beginning stages of doing the flax seed so time
will tell.
