Guest guest
Dear All, I had a 68year old lady come to my clinic last week. she has acute myeloid leukaemia. this has been diagnosed in the last month. Since 1999 she has been treated for thrombocytopenia. However in the last year she has had 3 bad reactions to platelet transfusions. She has blood transfusions every month. Her platelet count at the moment is about 5 (five). She actually feels perfectly well and plays tennis twice a week. She gets tired when her Hb is about 8.Her spleen is slightly enlarged, she has had haematuria, and haematemesis in the past year and she also gets petechiae in her mouth. Her consultant says she can`t have fierce chemo with such a low platelet count, she says she may get low dose chemo as an outpatient. She wants me to help her, but I have no experience with this. The obvious help I can give is with liver support and supportive care during chemo. Her diet is excellent although her appetite is poor. The books suggest Astragalus and Ginseng, Turmeric. I`m not really sure about immunity boosting herbs. Basically can anyone give me any suggestions re treatment. Alternatively can anyone suggest a herbalist with experience in this area.Help.! Guest guest
Have they tried the drug called " Gleevec " ? Suggest that your patient enquire... the AMA has now determined that drug is now the first-line treatment for CML over chemo (which often stops working and is incredibly debilitating...Gleevec is a simple pill taken in 100 mg increments and dosages depend upon the stage of the disease until it has been stabilized, has minimal side effects, light years ahead of chemo for CML). It is specific as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor which prevents the Philadelphia chromosome from excessive immature WBC production. My 62 year old patient has been stabilized for over 18 months on it. It is indicated in beginning, advanced and blastic stages of the disease. I offer a supportive role herbally, which has been working so far... I have posted his herbs previously... Guest guest
Re: Re: Acute myeloid leukaemia Dear Tami.. Sorry for not acknowledging your advice with AML. I have found your info very helpful but have not been on line for ages! I`m back into work mode now and will be speaking to my patient tonight .I will discuss Gleevec with her.I will also know how things are with her in general. Thanks again and I will let you know how we get on. Janine North Yorks MNIMH .MCPP > > > > List Owner: Graham White, MNIMH >
