Goiter is, simply put, an enlarged thyroid gland that continues to increase in size to try to make up for the fact that it can't produce the proper amount of thyroid hormone.

explaining a goiter

Today I had my ultrasound of my thyroid. While talking to my sister about it, my daughter overheard the word goiter and asked me what that word meant. Interestingly enough, my sister also asked me what specifically was a goiter.

Can anyone (ah-hem....Jan) explain what exactly a goiter is, but do so in laymen's terms. I would like to be able to explain this as easy as possible to my daughter who is only 7.

Thanks for the help.
