Guest guest
Dura: I think most people on this list realize Nystatin isn't a systemic drug, and only works in the gut. It's really sonsidered a topical drug. ... alot of activity goes on in the intestines- and who knows? It's possible the action of Nystatin in the gut changes the way alot of other things get absorbed (or not). Since J brought up Lamisil, and we're talking about anti-fungals, antibacterials and " Matrial Law " .... maybe some people didn't realize that NYSTATIN (which is from a soil fungal species) binds to ERGOSTEROL and ergosterol is: QUOTE FROM REFERENCE: Ergosterol is the biological precursor to Vitamin D2. It is turned into viosterol by ultraviolet light, and is then converted into ergocalciferol, which is a form of Vitamin D. END QUOTE Back before the The members of the 'group that shall remain nameless' went public, they were using KETOCONAZOLE cream on their skin extolling it' virtues about the cream inhibiting VIT D production in the skin.. and if you search on VitD/ketonazole you'll see their discussion. I think I was the one that actually did the research for them and explained why the cream worked- giving them REF. #1) ( I don't read their crap anymore because you can't separate the wheat from the chaff anymore )... Antifungals have alot more than one mode of action in the body - and probably like alot of drugs (as Penny points out) most of them are not well understood. (see ref # 2) ALot of the antifungals act on the P450 enzymes- Ketoconazole inhibits the CYP3A4 P450 enzyme so therefore can INCREASE the concentration of other drugs (or substances) that use that particular pathway. Theres always a cause and effect for tampering with these enzymes - it's not just like turning on or off a faucet. (see Ref 3) And I tend to agree with Tony on alot of points- including that antifungals can proabablt work against bacteria- hell they all originated in the soil at one time- and had to live together, so it's not all that far fetched in my mind.
