Are their specialty labs needed for Glutathione testing? and what Is the name of the test? Is it ran on whole blood ? Carol

In the meantime, I continue to encourage people with CFS to obtain a test for glutathione. One advantage of the blood tests for red blood cell or plasma glutathione is that they measure glutathione directly, so they are able to tell if glutathione is high or low, relative to normal. I don't think that the lymphocyte glutathione function test can tell whether glutathione is low, or whether the enzymes using glutathione have low activity. So this might be an advantage of the direct tests.Rich Van Konynenburg, Ph.D.

Hi, Carol.

Here is some information on glutathione testing.

I am not affiliated with any of these laboratories, and this list is

intended for information only, not as an endorsement of particular

laboratories or tests. There may be other labs that also offer

glutathione testing.

- Measurements of glutathione in blood plasma and red blood cells

(Immunosciences Lab, Beverly Hills, CA)

http://www.immuno-sci-lab.com/table_152_2003.htm

- Measurements of glutathione in blood plasma and red blood cells

(Amscot Medical Labs, Cincinnati, Ohio. Phone: 1-800-851-1708)

E-mail: amscot@...

- Glutathione functional activity of lymphocytes

(Spectracell Laboratories, Houston, TX)

- Evaluation of the Phase II glutathione detoxification pathway by a

detoxification panel

(Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory, Ashville, NC)

http://www.gsdl.com/assessments/oxidativestress/

- Reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, lipid peroxides by

oxidative stress panel (can be combined with former, also GSDL)

http://www.gsdl.com/assessments/detox/index.html

- Measurement of urinary organic acids (particularly citric,

2-oxo-glutaric and pyroglutamic acids, which are indicative of

glutathione levels, but this takes some interpretation)

(Great Plains Laboratory, Lenexa, KS)

These labs supply kits or instructions for taking the samples.
