Mg & cyclines: absorption blocking mechanism??

Here's a Q that neither my doc or I knew the answer to:

Does Mg affect the absorption of ORAL cyclines only or does it affect

ALL route of delivery?

I'm taking a form of Mg for heart arrythmias as prescribed by the

cardiologist. It really is helping some of the chest pain and I take

it throughout the day.

They want to put me on mino & zith. Now we know that Mg messes up the

absorption of oral mino, but does it affect it if delivered

transdermally for instance? Or how 'bout via IV?

Is it a local issue (shared gut space) or a systemic issue (all Mg

affects all mino)?

Thanks in advance.

Interesting subject.

To answer your question about decreased absorption with the cycline

family and Magnesium (Mg).

The short answer is yes and yes.. and it's an interference issue.

The cyclines combined with Ma, Ca. or Zn compete and interfer- so one

decreases the absorption of the other and visa versa (in other words

Mg can block the absorption of one of the minerals, or the mineral

can block the absorption of the drug)

The status of the person taking the drugs/supplements is also

important - but as a general rule the status of B6 in the body

determines how much Mg gets absorbed- and it absorbes best when taken

several times per day in the correct ratio with Ca. (Ca:Mg 2:1)

The interference between the substances doesn't matter whether it's

administered IV or orally- but it might change the % of interference.

another thing to keep in mind is only about 500mg of Ca can be

absorbed at a time - so keep that in mind when supplements- taking

GeGundo amounts of Mg creates an excess - which is what some do on

purpose for bowel regularity.

Also- Zith absorption drops by 50% when taken with food.. but some

have to take it with food to tolerate it. Dr.s will prescibe a higher

dose when it's recommended to be taken with food.

So yah- it can become a dosing nightmare.

I was popping something in my mouth every 2 hrs it seemed.
