Guest guest
Cara We have found the Britax Boulevard seat we already had worked just fine. But every kid is different. A good idea is to take them for a 20 minute drive before heading home from the hospital so if it is pinching around the hips, the docs can adjust it before you get home. They adjust really quickly to the cast. If he's already walking, he should be up and about within a day, probably sooner. Our son was running at top speed within 5 hours of waking up from the procedure. The saying that it is tougher on the parents and we have found to be true. Children of shockingly resilient. Guest guest
Hi Cara, Welcome. My daughter Chloe who is 20 months old just had a cast put on last Monday at Shriners in Chicago. She also wore a brace for about 4 months but after finding this group and talking to her PT, we found out about Shriners and went there. I really like the doctors and the rest of the staff there and last week we had a very good experience. well as good as you can for having a cast put on a young child. how old is Max? We have a Britax carseat. I am not sure if it is the boulevard or the Roundabout but it works fine. we actually have it rear facing and it reclines a bit and Chloe seems very comfy in it. We brought some stretchy pants, bigger shirts and toys she likes the day of. she was pretty out of it for most of the day. Also, we bought Poise pads (for adult incontinence) at the suggestion of members here and they seem to be working well. we put them in the diaper for extra protection from leaking). The first couple of days were pretty hard for us. I think she was just frustrated and a bit uncomfortable but I had a harder time than she did! the good news is it is only a week later and it is so much better. please feel free to ask any questions or email me if you have specific questions about Shriners or anything else. Guest guest
Cara, Has your son gotten casted before or was he just being monitored? What is his degree up to and how old is he? Either way, you are in great hands at Chicago. We have been there for almost a year and our daughter went from a 74 degree curve and is now at 29! They do amazing work and are so caring. As far as your car seat question, we've never needed a special car seat for our daughter. I know there are better ones out there that suit the better needs of children with casts on and other might chime in about that, but i think if you already have one you are using, it should be fine. Your son will adjust better than you think. They get used to it so fast. He may be a little crabby and tired after the procedure from the anesthetia, but he will be just fine. :)Good luck on Wednesday. Know people will be praying for you! Keep us updated.ShaunaSubject: I am a returning mom who needs help ASAP!!!!To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Monday, March 23, 2009, 11:28 AM Hi there! Guest guest
Thank you for the responses that I have gotten so far. Max is 18 months old and he has been monitored for the last year. His curve is 30 degrees up from 17 just 3 months ago. It is so strange how the curve can get worse with no warning. I have wondered about the whole diapering thing and wondered if the poise pads worked. I have heard that since little boys pee up it is hard to keep the cast dry. I am sure with experimentation it will be fine. We were contemplating staying in Chicago on Wednesday night as well just to make sure that the cast was not rubbing and fit well since we live so far away. Is that something that we should be considering? I am thankful to have someplace to feel like others know how I feel! Guest guest
Cara Re: poise pads for boys-- We use them and have the top of the poise pad extend just above the top of the front of the diaper to create a little extra protection. We then tuck that top of the poise pad under the front side of the cast. Basically, since boys do pee upwards it absorbs any extra pee in the middle of the night. It has worked great for us. Guest guest
Hi Cara, My son Finn has been casted in Chicago for a year now. He will be three on May 31st. How old is your son? Finn has adjusted so well to the cast but the first couple were tough. They were mostly tough on me because I had to figure out what worked and what did not. As for the car seat, I have a special needs Britax in my van. It can recline with the seat in my van and it is very comfortable for longer rides. My husband has a regular Graco carseat that doesn't recline and he is fine going short distance without any problems. Guest guest
Hi Cara, I'm sorry Max has progressed.... We never needed to change our car seat, but we did go up a size in clothes. How old is Max now? Guest guest
Cara When I seen your post, I had to email you. We are from Indy(Noblesville) and our daughter just got her first cast on 3/12/09 with Dr. Sturm in Chicago. Our daughter did wear a brace for a year or so as well and then her curve progressed. She is 2 1/2 now. We were very nervous about getting her first cast. Honestly, for our family, this has been harder on us then on her. She really was back to herself in just a few short days. She was already potty trained and continues to do great in the cast. The hardest part was sleeping. She gets "stuck" from time to time and we just have to go into her room to adjust her. She plays and acts so much like herself that we are in amazement. It breaks my heart to see her have to make modifications to pick things up, going up and down stairs etc. But,she really doesn't seem to mind. She still wears diapers at night. After a little trial and error, we found that night time pull ups by Huggies seem to work the best for her. The pull-ups are easier to tuck into the cast than a regular diaper. Bath time is a little different, but my older daugher who is 5, joins Raegan during a sponge bath and they both wash their hair in the sink. The carseat that seems to work best for us is the Britax, because it reclines. We found the first few days she tended to recline more when sitting up because the cast hits her on the top of the legs. But after a few days, she didn't seem to notice and was sitting straight up with little problem. She definitely has areas that the cast rubs, but we just treat them and they heal up pretty quickly without much issue. We had a great experience at Shriner's Chicago, so we pray that you will too. Just stay stong for your little one. The hardest part that day for us was when they had to trim the cast and tape it/pad it. Raegan was still trying to recover from anesthesia and screamed the whole time.
