Guest guest
Each hospital has different " normal " limits. Most lab result print outs I've seen include the normal limit range next to the result and may have a H or L next to the result to indicate if it's Higher or Lower than the average/normal limits. But here are some links I came across. Ammonia test from labtestsonline: http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/ammonia/test.html Liver Function Tests: http://home3.inet.tele.dk/omni/alttest.htm This is from Kaiser that has their norm limits: http://www.kaiserpermanente.org/kpweb/healthency.do?hwid=hw1768 & sectionId=hw1792\ & contextId=hw1768 encephalopathy: http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3185.htm MaC preciouspenny3 wrote: I got the lab tests back that were taken Tuesday. Guest guest
Normal ammonia at the university of Colorado is 16 to 47. I have had them at 54 before, but ammonia level is not a relieable test for PSE. My hepatologist has said the the best way to find out if you have PSE is to treat it with lactulose, and if there is improvement, then that argues for a positive diagnosis. Here is a clinical test used by many hepatologists. http://www.duphalac.com/professionals/portosystemicencephalopathy/psetest/0,998,\ 10319-2-0,00.htm Ammonia I got the lab tests back that were taken Tuesday. Guest guest
Thanks for the links. It does say H next to it and normal is 11-51. Guest guest
Oh man.. now I have to have my ammonia score too! Penny your symtoms sound an awful lot like what Im experiencing right now. But some of my fatique could be due to diabetes and thyroid problems that Ive had for years.. Only been this bad once before tho and thats when I was anemic for a varices bleed..fixed the bleed and within a few days I felt like a spring chicken.. That forgetting in mid sentence and word finding is new to me too.. Like Mac said, different labs use different scoring systems so look next to the score and there should be a range of whats normal for that test and if there is an H or L this will mean high or low. At least thats been true in my case..Debra \ > > I got the lab tests back that were taken Tuesday. My ammonia level was > 94. I know it's a little high, but is it very high? Guest guest
Wow, I must be worse off than I thought. I just realized that what I said in my last post is almost verbatim what Mac said.. If you are a 94 and the high range for normal is 51.. then that seems really high to me.. I guess I better get those tests too. Debra I got the lab tests back that > were taken Tuesday. Guest guest
The other night while searching for articles, i came across one titled " Hypothyroidism mistaken for hepatic encephalopathy " in the AASLD publication 'hepatology'. I cannot find it now, but I will keep on looking. I have strange problems, including temper tantrums. Usually I will just repeat myself to Sharon over and over, until she gets mad. Ardis did this too, and I have started to preface sentences with " I don't know if I've mentioned this before, so forgive me... I have also had to back up my PC several times, because I lose things. delete things, and sometimes I read my emails, and do not recognize what I've said. This is the scariest thing for me. One day last summer I came in to find Ardis sitting in a pile of spironolactone. There were 500 pills scattered on the carpet, and I never did find out how many she took. Anyway, she went by ambulance that day, and lived all summer, so it turned out not to be that big a deal. Just scary. Re: Ammonia Oh man.. now I have to have my ammonia score too! Guest guest
Hey, No one can say for sure that an ammonia level of 43 or 78 will cause this symptom or that. It is entirely up to the individual. Some people may experience symptoms at very low levels, while others may tolerate higher levels of ammonia and not experience any symptoms. But the fact that your ammonia level is high, and you feel things that may be related, I would put my best guess that they are symptoms or related symptoms. It is something you should discuss with your doctor. In the meantime, watch your diet of course, including sodas, etc. Try to lower your bodies production of ammonia. MaC preciouspenny3 wrote: Thanks for the links. It does say H next to it and normal is 11-51. I guess I was wondering if it was high enough to cause the symptoms.
