Sri, Primatene is fine for mild, occasional asthma, but is harsh on chronic asthmatics (I used it for years when I had no medical insurance, and it probably damaged my lungs badly -- I was going through an inhaler a week). Another OTC inhaler that I have seen is Bronkosol. I haven't seen it on the shelves for years... but then again I haven't looked. It's possible also that he may be suffering from allergy-induced asthma, in which case you might want to try OTC antihistamines like Sudafed. Hm, steam might be useful as well. As someone else pointed out, albuterol is chemically very similar to theophylline. He might benefit from a few cups of tea. -- Slainte, S. Guest guest
Black coffee will help ease an asthma attack. Lobelia extract will relax and put a stop to the spasms. It tastes awful though. Another thing I found that use to help before I got all these expensive inhalers was Mullein tea leaves. It helped control coughing, spasms and lossen mucus. Good luck. -- Urgent Help Needed My Dad is visiting me from Asia for this summmer and I took visitor insurance for him, but it doesn't cover existing problems and he has asthma. Guest guest
Sri, Mullein grows abundantly in Europe and North America. I collect mine in the fields. You may have to do a bit of research to find it where you live and if it grows there. C-M
Guest guest
Sri, Yes, you can get mullein in a Health food store. But it also grows around Minneapolis right now wild , out in the open. The plant starts out as a rosette with very large velvety leaves, second year a stem comes out with large leaves, looking a bit like tobacco leaves. The taller the plant, the less velvet the leaves become.Mullein can grow up to 6 feet and along the stem has little seed nodules with yellow flowers. They are very noticeable and not hard to identify.. Pick them now, hang up somewhere where they are dry and dark, crumble when dry and store and a dark container, dry and cool. Mullein loves to grow in places where the soil has just been turned, like constructions sites, fields that have been logged. C-M
Guest guest
Primatene inhaler is not a good choice. It can backfire on you. In other words it can cause you to have even more breathing problems. That stuff put me in the ER many years ago. It has emuniphren probably spelled wrong, it in. I am allergic to emuniphren. So are many other people. The best thing would be to take your dad to a clinic or your doctor if you have one, and get him a perscription for an inhaler etc. Good Luck. Guest guest
Sri, Any place that sells herbs for health. I don't know where you live so am not sure what kind of stores are around you. Sometimes they come in capsules too. -- Urgent Help Needed> > My Dad is visiting me from Asia for this summmer and I took visitor > insurance for him, but it doesn't cover existing problems and he has > asthma.
