Guest guest
With all the talk of snoozing going around, I was reminded of a show I watched a while ago. It was a local, no frills PBS type thing with no know personality in it. The guest was a neuro-surgeon. His take on pain and chronic pain was very realistic and in my opinion, he'd be the kind of Doc I'd want to treat me. He mentioned a sleeping aid he prescribed to many of his patients with which he claimed an unusual amount of success. By the way this chap sounded, I'd be inclined to believe there was no exaggeration on his part. He didn't push medication or surgery or anything which might be construed as an underlying ulterior motive. A lot of chronic pain patients with lower back problems tend to sleep in the wrong position. It's a self protecting thing. It may not be the correct way to stand, sit, sleep, etc but we tend to develop habits like crab walking and so on because they cause less pain or because by limiting our movement we feel there is less chance of injury. I know I certainly do that. His idea is to use a bath towel, roll it into a fairly stiff tube and wrap it around your middle. You can hold it in place with a belt or something. According to him, it gives your spine just the shape needed to alleviate the pain in a lot of cases. In his words, the result if any is immediate so you don't have to do it for a week to try. Just once and if in the morning you don't feel better, scrap it, it's not for you. How big a bath towel should you use, and what size roll ? His answer was : " just enough so that you look stupid " . I thought that was pretty good ! Hopefully this can help someone out. What is it they say ? If you can help even one person, it was worth it ?
