Starry nights,

Ask around and try to find a Doc that will give samples. Just tell them

that you have no more insurance and can't afford meds. Most Doc's who

are a kind of community clinic will have ample supplies of sample

albuterol inhalers to give out. Also ask if he would write a prescription

good for a year and promise to come in or go to the ER if you have a

real bad attack.

There are also drug companies that have deals with Doc's where you can

apply for free meds if very low income and you have no insurance.

Go Google for them.

What would I search on - low income drugs?

I never thought of trying OTHER doctors, but won't they want to do all

sorts of tests, etc - which I can't afford right now?

But surely they won't just give out drugs to someone they don't know - what

about malpractice?

I hate the way money rules everything. People really don't count. To have

to wait until you have an asthma attack to get help is backwards but I

guess that's because money rules the world!

MOst communities have clinics that are supported by Federal funds and

they have to treat everyone according to their income. Just ell them out

front you have no insurance, can't afford tests and just need a

prescription for your inhalers.

I found out that when they know you have no insurance they do not get

that test happy..:)

Insurance is a big con, and it sucks that you have to have an attack

before you can do anything about it.

Do you qualify for Medicare or anything like that? I don't know how any

of that works, but it might be worth looking into.

My doctor's nurse keeps telling me " he says . . . " - meaning my doctor, but

I wonder if it is him or her! I could always send him a fax.

I understand what you mean about learning the system. It's terrible.

Four years ago I lost a good job of 16 yrs long. it was well paid, too. I

was highly skilled and at the top of my pay level and as a result people

either don't want to hire you or don't want you for long. I am returning

to school shortly to retrain. Nevertheless, the four years has been a

financial nightmare.

I called the office yesterday and left the b*** nurse a message saying I

didn't mind coming in for an office visit but can I pay for it next

week. it will be interesting to see what she says.

Nowadays when I call for refills she takes about a WEEK to call it into the

pharmacy and then only after many phone calls from me - and a few arguments

with her scattered in between.

This BS about going in for a checkup is nonsense. I saw him last October

and prior to that it was two years!

<<My problem is that I am presently unemployed and have no medical

insurance. My doctor's nurse is a pure b**** and is refusing to refill

my

prescriptions until I go to see the doctor. I saw him six months ago

and

the prescription just ran out. This is so unlike him. I understand

that

he needs to oversee my care but I am asthmatic and MUST have

medications.

It's hard enough trying to keep the roof over my head while unemployed,

nevermind, pay out of my own pocket for not only an office call but

prescription meds!>>

Call the office and ask what an office visit would cost just to have a

new prescription for your asthma. When there, tell them you can't afford

tests, that you have no insurance, barely getting by and how they can

help you...

Don't talk to the office gals, tell your Doc this.

If he is a good guy, he will work with you on the free prescription

plans or scrounge for free inhalers.

I commiserate, for I am 59, broke my hip last year and am unemployable,

yet too young for social services and have to many assets..

I learned to figure out the system, Doc's and all that, it's not easy.

No one cn do it for you and you have to be persistent and not get

discouraged, just plow along..

Most Doc's that have you on Asthma meds will have you on 6 month

rechecks for meds. But some Doc's will give you a years prescription

especially if you tell them you are a hardship case. I hate switching

Doc's but I had to do it and actually found that the Doc's at the

community clinic, which is supported with federal grants are much more

tuned in to people who have no insurance and are low income.

It's really tough to be over 50 and find employment that gives medical..

I know one thing, next election , health care better is an issue and

that's where my vote goes.

Heard on the news yesterday that they are working on covering every

Iraqi with free health care..... ( enough said )
