Yes, I did get that from your first mention of them. Seems like the little ones often have the most flavor, don't you think? I had a wonderful big kind this year, but lost the name label, do not remember the name. So mad at myself!!

wine is a very good, large tomato but doesn't produce many fruit. My all time favorite, all things considered is Better boy.

Then it is "Sweet 100's" for me next year, . Thanks.

Re: OT**** 's Tomatoes

It is 96 degrees here, , and my tomatoes have just about quit. Are the Sweet 100's extra heat hardy? I remember Felder talking about some that would keep on bearing when it got hot, but forgot to write down the names

We have had a lot of days in the 90's and mine is still going. I think they are quiet heat tolerant. It's 97 degrees here right now. The nights are still cooling down to low 70's and high 60's

, wine is one of the ones I bought this spring, and could very well be the one that I lost the label for. It did not produce very many tomatoes, but they were the most flavorful ones I have had since I was a child. Thank you. Now I can get more next year. I have gotten Better Boy before, and like them also, but the wine was superb. Guess I will have to plant lots since they do not bear many on each vine.

I was recently watching Victory Garden and the host mentioned that you should save your seeds, from vegetables and flowers. He said you not only save money but you ensure you can get the same item year after year. Commercial seed companies often stop producing certain items and you can no longer get many items that you could in the past. He also said that when people trade seeds they really enjoy what they get from each other and it makes for a good experience.

I sure wish I had the seeds from the tomatoes my father grew when I was a child.

I am growing 10 different varieties of tomatoes this year. Some are setting fruit in this hot weather and some or not. I am keeping records on all of them. I wish for you a good holiday week end.

Good morning Elaine:

That's true about saving seed but hybrid seed will not produce true to form. Most of the modern tomatoes are hybrid. Better boy is one of them. wine on the other hand, is a true heirloom and will produce identical off springs. I have saved seed from a better boy and am now on the 5th generation. Each year the fruit is different from the year before. Eventually one of the original parents characteristics will become dominate and it will no longer be considered s hybrid. This is true with modern sweet corn also.

Hi all!,

I have a friend who grows tomatoes and he has one type called " Heat

Wave " which was bred and developed at the University of Florida for

high temps. He's willing to send some seeds to a few people in the

group.

Just peeking out of the woodwork <grin>

there are a few heirloom garden places that sell seeds on the

internet, i used to be on the mailer of one of them, but i cant

remember the name.

they called it a seed bank or seed museum or something.

heirloom tomatoes are in big right now. all the cooking shows have

been talking about them, and albertsons even sells some now.

here in Oregon, we buy Early Girl, Willamette, Beefstake, wine

and a couple others. You have to get a cold hardy one here.

Everyone is talking about their veggies,, and i might have a couple

zuchini, and i do have a couple peppers, the eggplant has been

flowering like crazy, but i havent seen any fruit yet.

the watermelon still hasnt flowered,i dont think i will have

watermelon this year.

i dont have any luck with watermelon, i guess i need to find someone

that grows them here and ask what the trick is. i wonder if it's the

PH, i dont check the PH here, i just usually grow what works in this

soil becauuse i'm a lazy gardener.

the strawberries are still doing pretty good, i didnt pick the last

batch though, wasnt home much for a few days.

the blueberries are almost ripe and i went to the farmers market last

week and they had a variety of black berries that were ripe. the wild

blackberries here dont ripen until August.

So i'm jealous of all of you who are some where warmer and have so

many veggies already!

i hope that flooding in the NE is better, maybe i will catch some news

and see how it is.

i hope everyone is well and has nice plans for the 4th.

*lol* i understand about Walmart, i dont recall the new federal terms

for Organic, but it should be OK if not great.

too bad about the heat and drought. they farm in eastern oregon and

it is actually a desert, they have to water everything from irrigation

sources. makes for some good wine & watermelons, but they are huge

problems some years

weird weather this year, June Floods in the NE and still drought in

the SE,

weather here has been interesting, we seem to be having weather more

like california, more dry days, heavier rain on the days we have rain,

it looked like it was going to rain for a week but it didnt, i dont

think it's rained for a couple of weeks now. it usually rains

sometime on the 3, 4, or 5th of July, we'll see if it does this year.

one year was just fantastic, it was stiffling hot, and just after we

finished watching the fireworks at Midnight it started raining, we

were all standing out inthe rain because it felt so good.

i hope it rains soon, otherwise i'm going to be spending a lot on

water! water here is horribly expensive, between the taxes and the

waste management problems and the failed billing system...

every year i think i'll get those rain barrels, up and i dont.

finishing up early. Only the very heat resistant tomatoes like

's " Sweet l00's " are still bearing, and strawberries are just a

sweet memory, ditto blueberries. WalMart this morning had tomatoes

they were calling " heirloom " in their organic section, and I got some.

Haven't tried them yet. My daughter does not believe anything from

WalMart could really be organic. I understand that there is some

ambiguity about the term organic, but it would seem that they would

have to meet some standard.
