What we need for any new Message/List Board

My feeling is that a minimum requirement

of any new board is:

all of existing history from

I & I shall be imported into as individual messages (ideally with the

same message numbers) and in threads where practical

very good threading and search

abilities

People wish to continue to add to the old

I & I knowledge base – this must be imported into any new board. For

me, the ability (and ease) of doing such an import of the old message is a

critical decision maker for the software and the hosting service and was the

focus of my analysis.

Putting 11000 messages in a text file is a

crude hack that is not friendly to many people --- loading and searching a

single text file that is 100’s of megs is beyond the capacity of many

PWCs, also lost are dynamic links to pages, people will have to copy the text

and paste it.

IMHO

Dear Ken

My 11000 messages are in Outlook Express and can be exported as a WAB file preserving their structure and sequence. I am not sure how they can be converted to any other form but I can find out.

Ken, I think its easy to load a few-meg text file (containing, say a

month of I & I) and search thru it using a " find text " function (at

the tops of the files could be instructions on this for those who

dont know how to do it).

But I agree with you about the threading - its a real pity to lose

that, and it would be good to get it back if someone has the ability

and will to do it.

IMHO theres no reason the old stuff has to be seamlessly integrated

with the new, since old threads here are so rarely resurrected.
