Guest guest
Dear all does anyone have any useful exercises for maintaining good prostate health? i have a patient who has bph and prostatitis. At the moment he is on avodart to reduce the size and an ab for the prostatitis.he wants to stop the medication ( his consultant says the prostate enlargement will return if he stops the avodart ) at the moment he is trying to be as activeas poss and walks quite alot but he also uses a n exercise bike and uses a " bullworker " .this particular form of exercise concerns me most as he is pulling this contraption up from floor towards him.while standing. I feel this will put too much negative pressure on the prostate.any ideas on what might be more beneficial ? thanks , annette annette wass
Guest guest
thanks for the ideas re above.Id be interested to know if others think the bullworker exercise he does ( pulling a chest expander kind of contraption upwards from floor while standing ) is likely to be more harmful than beneficial - it just seems likely that it would put too much downwards pressure on the prostate but I dont know for sure if thats right or not.If he shouldnt be doing it Id like to tell him when I see him this week. thanks , annette ps -Tamsin I accessed the yahooyoga site but couldnt find out how or where to get the info regarding the moola banda- there wasnt a search option.sorry to be a pain ! Guest guest
Annette... I would think that Pilates would be ideal, because it involves core strength. That includes pelvic floor musculature and a certain amount of work with the legs above the heart/torso. The variations of positions helps to improve pelvic circulation and counteract the force of gravity of all the organs in the " pelvic bowl " . It involves precision, strength, flexibility... BUT its important to have an authentically trained instructor to introduce these exercises to him. Look online for the " Pilates Guild " and you can search for international instructors. These are folks trained either directly through Romana (a direct decendant of ph Pilates), or through other classically trained instructors. They partake in continuing education symposiums on an international forum, not just here in the US. Otherwise, if you go with a random instructor, they could simply be 'fitness instructors' who have taken weekend workshops and then " hang out their shingle " to teach... I've seen numerous injuries from people taking sessions with poorly qualified instructors. I've been taking pilates training for 2 years now, and it is remarkable exercise that is not just activity, but 'therapy'. Guest guest
Dear Annette There is a specific Yogic banda (or hold) inidicated for prostatitis - basically a perineal contraction. It's very easy to learn and practice, no special classes needed & he can inorporate it into his usual regime, if he enjoys that. For full instructions, look in any Sivananda book of yoga under 'moola banda', or this website explains how: http://www.yahooyoga.com/yyh1802.htm Regards Tamsin Reply-To: ukherbal-list To: <ukherbal-list > Subject: exercises for prostate health Date: Mon, 7 Jan 1980 02:06:02 -0000 Dear all does anyone have any useful exercises for maintaining good prostate health? i have a patient who has bph and prostatitis. Guest guest
Dear Annette: Sorry it was hard to find! Following are simple instructions if you want to pass them on to your Px. For more information, check: http://www.yogasite.com/mulabandha.htm http://www.yogasite.com/engagingmb.htm Regards, Tamsin The Moola Bhanda: The Bhandas (or 'locks) are used in yoga to generate energy. In yoga therapy, this internal exercise is indicated for prostate health: Directions: 1) Contract the muscles between the pubic bone and the tailbone, pulling the perineum up in towards the abdomen. 2) As you pull the pelvic floor up, feel the lower deep abdominal muscles engage and pull towards the spine. Initially you will need to contract the anus and the genitals, but over time work on relaxing these areas and isolate the perineum (the space between the anus and genitals). 3) Mula bandha can be engaged from 15 to 100 percent of the contraction and can either be held for as long as possible or used by rhythmically engaging and releasing the contraction with the breath. Do not strain while holding. _________________________________________________________________ Be the first to hear what's new at MSN - sign up to our free newsletters! http://www.msn.co.uk/newsletters
Guest guest
Is this the same as Kiegel exercises, or is this something different? It sounds similar, but I don't know how it is that you can isolate the perineum from the rest of the pelvic floor... they are all connected. The muscles that are used to start/stop the flow of urine also move the rest of the pelvic floor simultaneously. Have you tried it and found success in isolating? Guest guest
Yes, is advanced yoga but very simple. Just takes some practice to relax other muscles! It was traditionally used by the Brahmin to 'seal' their energy. It feels incredible, helps posture & concentration as well as physical complaints in the area.
