My heart melted when I read this. Even though my daughter does not have

MDS, she is deaf. She is 2 ½ and I have yet to hear her say more than a few

words.

I feel honored to be a part of your group. I do not have a child with MDS.

I am a special education teacher, and I will have a student with MDS on my

caseload next year. I wanted to find out as much as I could about it. I

have been enlightened reading the exchanges in this e-mail group.

Subject: knocked my socks off on Sunday

, my 5 year old who rarely speaks, and I were playing in the

sandbox together Sunday afternoon - taking turns shoveling sand into a

bucket. She came over to the other side of the sandbox and sat on my

lap. I hugged her and said " I love you, " - she hugged me back

and said " I love you, Mommy " - her words are not that clear (except for

Mommy) so I said " did you just say I love you Mommy? " she nodded and I

gave her an extremely long hug! It was so nice to hear - I tried to get

her to do it again without specifically asking and she would not do it.

She has said it a few (1 or 2) times since then. I have been waiting

for her to say that for 5.5 years and I am so happy she did!! I have

been using Dr. Jim's methods for a few weeks now (thank you Kristy) and

it really seems to be helping.

There is nothing so sweet as to hear your child saying something clearly,

especially " I love you mommy " Nat says his clearest words when he is angry and

my husband and I weren't too sure if we should scold or praise him when he said

a few colorful words recently!! His speech therapist told us to get him angry

more often!!

Congrats Darlene! Hearing our children talk is such a beautiful gift. And

those few words " I Love You " are simply the best...
