Can anyone come up with any ideas on a 77yr old man, a retired butcher, who has

been suffering from painful leg spasms for the last 5yrs which are worsening.

They occur throughout the day and he is often woken by them at night when he

finds gettting up and having a cup of strong tea helps to relieve Sx so he can

get back to sleep. Sx better in the morning and improve slightly with using dead

sea salts.

He is taking EPO, garlic, cod liver oil & fish oil, 'Celery +' (apium

graveolens, salix alba, tanacetum, harpagophytum, yucca stem) ginkgo 2g, Ca &

Mg, and a multi-vit; all self prescribed.

He is also taking on prescription Allopurinol (100mg) for gout; Finasteride

'Proscar' and 'Omnic' - tamsolosin hydrochloride- for prostate problems

(although tests showed the prostate was not enlarged- but he sufffers from

urinary frequency). He occasionally takes valium which he has been using for

5yrs and has been prescribed 'Lyrica' pregablin 50mg for the spasms but it

didn't help so he's stopped taking it.

He also suffers from venous insufficiency and wears strong support socks - he

has not had any ulceration since he started wearing them . He had a vein

stripped 20yrs ago.

I could not get a reflex response from either ankle. knees ok and there was no

Babinski response

Diet good - a lot of fruit & veg etc. Non smoker, doesn't drink, used to walk

3mls / day but is now restricted thru Sx.

Over the last 4 months I've been giving him aesculus, centella, hypericum, vib

op & lobelia but they have made no impact on the spasms at all. Does anyone have

any suggestions?

Chris
