Guest guest
Dear Graham, I notice second mix has CImcifuga. I seem to remember reading in one of Arthur Hyde's lecture notes that Cimcifuga can cause severe headaches in some people. Dose related so she may need less or it taken out altogehter. susan Adverse reaction?? > Dear All > > I'm treating a 35 yo lady for period pains. Guest guest
Hi Graham These reactions are documented, e.g. Simon Mills, Dictionary of Modern herbalism, Mabey (Ed.) A New Herbal (entry on Cimicifuga I expect will have been written by McIntyre. I've seen headaches occur and suspected Cimicifuga FE a few times, though generally mild and dose related. In one case of vomiting and headaches, the patient persisted with the medicine, because she felt better after vomiting, and had no further reactions. Some people are sensitive to it, but a small proportion. I have also suspected it to be causing looseness on a couple of occasions. I tend to prescribe less of it than I used to, though partly for environmental reasons.
Guest guest
Yes, I have had a patient who experienced headaches (not as severe as your patient's) *apparently* as a result of Cimicifuga being added to the mix. The link is not completely clear cut because the person suffers from occasional migraine headaches anyway, but since you raise the question ... ? Guest guest
Dear Graham Yes, I've had exactly the same response to Cimicifuga fluid extract, severe worsening of headache, together with associated nausea and vomiting. When I dropped to tincture everything settled. This has only been in the one patient, whom I was treating for migraine. Guest guest
Hi Again Thanks for all your replies. <snip> >2nd. Rx was sinensis, Cimicifuga FE, Tarax rad, Glycyrrhiza, Vib. >op. >I have spoken to her on the phone and she is going to try the second Rx >again as an experiment (her idea not mine!). She did this and got the following reaction: " I restarted the preparation after we spoke on Thursday evening and on Saturday morning I woke with another severe headache. I am still not convinced that it is definitely something in the preparation that is causing them, but am now too scared to take any more. I have now had another period and found that the Bosswellia Serrata worked very well. I am very keen to persevere with the treatment. " >I presume that if it is the TR causing the problems the the culprit is >probably the Cimicifuga - anyone ever had similar problems?? From your replies and this case it looks pretty definite that the Cimicifuga is the cause of the problems. - is this worth a letter to EJHM? Cheers Graham White B.Sc. (Herb. Med.), MNIMH.
