Guest guest
Susi: I have never heard of using neomycin for the kind of gut problems our kids have. It is a bacterial suppressant, whereas vancomycin is bactericidal, and can practically sterilize the gut in a week. Why vancomycin rather than metronidazole, which is a generic? We've used neomycin in the past and it seemed to get rid of the bacteria. We don't have drug coverage under out insurance plan and the pharmacist just let me know that the vancomycin would be $744 for one week....I nearly fainted. If I recall neomycin was just over $100 for 2 weeks supply. Do you think it'd be OK to use the less expensive one? > > Susi > > >
Guest guest
Thanks for the clarification. This is just our regular pediatrician who gave the 2 prescriptions. I doubt that he's ever Rx'd either very often if at all from our conversation. I'll call the pharmacy and see if they have the other and if they can call the pediatrician for a change of prescription. Hope it's alot cheaper too...I'm still in shock at the cost of the vancomycin. Guest guest
Dr. McCandless, The pharmacy has the metronidazole and it's extremely cheap, so I just called the pediatrician to see if we could have metronidazole instead and he said he won't Rx flagyl because it causes uterine tumors. ?????? Should I just continue with the neomycin then since he won't agree to the other? Guest guest
Please ask your pediatrician for any scientific article that makes this association. Some animal studies way back showed teratogenicity for pregnant animals (rats) at extremely high doses, but no studies on humans have shown this. One study followed women who used it extensively for 20 years without an association with cancer. At the doses we use and the infrequency that we need to use it, it is an extremely safe drug, and many of us have given it to kids for years without any problems. It has a long history of 40 years of use, and is considered by everyone I know to be extremely safe. I have no objection to the neomycin; I'm just not sure there is anything as effective as metronidazole (which is a generic and very reasonable) or vancomycin (which is incredibly expensive).
