Guest guest
Saw an interesting little movie by sophia Copola, Francis’ twenty something daughter. “Virgin Suicides” was about five very pretty blond girls who were sort of born out of nowhere in the Midwest. Because of the multiple repetition of their birth, I guess, they were noticed as different and thus became idolized by the community, especially by adolescent boys. The symbolism was awesome. These teenage girls represented the princess or spiritual wife that all men desire but can never bring to earth. They were thus idolized and never treated as human. The girls killed themselves and thereby remained objects of idolization and wonder forever. I guessed the girls killed themselves for a couple of reasons. First, they felt lonely and empty that they could never be treated like regular women of the earth like everybody else. Secondly, the movie brought up a point that I made a while back, and Alice commented about. It seems almost as if when a person is dealt a persona that is perfect for others’ use as an object for an ideal archetype, that person often can not shed the persona to become real. Fate somehow seems to obligate the person to remain an object, which requires that they kill themselves for preservation of that ideal. I gave before the examples of ; Marilyn; ; Elvis; Dean; Janis; and the Greatest, Ali, who died but still lived. I guess you would also have to toss Jesus into the group if such a man actually lived, which I think has been pretty much proved that he did. I could cite a bunch of absolutely marvelous symbols that were employed in the movie – and will if anybody wants to talk about it. It was one of those movies that I would have given almost anything to have created myself. I would love it if someone with a greater understanding of Jungian psychology than I could shed some analytical light on the film. I told my wife that I would ask this esteemed group. Thanks.
