Guest guest
Mac, I have been having a lot of nose bleeds. Is this common? It is somewhat dry here, but I have cnetral air and the air doesn't seemed to be that dry. Lyncia
Guest guest
You know what Lyncia, my wife had the same thing! I lived in Mojave California at the time. When she first started having bad nose bleeds, they told me it was because of the dry desert air. So I bought humidifiers, but she still had them but not as bad. Come to find out, they think it was tied into her platelet count. Do you know what your platelet count is? How often do you see your doctor? Normally they see you every three months until other symptoms show up. When they see you they should be doing labs. These are available to you through the hospital records section. You can call them or stop by. We would stop by the records section after appointments and give instructions that we wanted copies and they would tell us when we could come back and pick them up. You should do this if you haven't already. Anyway, you probably didn't expect a long answer. In short, yes, it is common. It is more common with low platelets. Things you can do is to increase your Vitamin K intake. There isn't an over the counter supplement for this so you will need to find foods high in it. Like, spinach, broccoli, dark green veggies. There are others, pomegranate comes to mind for some reason. I remember my wife drinking pomegranate juice a lot for that. Another thing besides the humidifier you can do is put water on your fingers put it to your nostrils and breath in with your nose. This gives immediate relief to a dry nose. There may be slight discomfort though. And only use enough water to cover the finger. MaC Lyncia wrote: Mac, I have been having a lot of nose bleeds. Is this common? Guest guest
Lyncia, the nose bleeds were the other thing that convinced me that I had liver disease. Ardis had them too. She bruised really easy too. My platelets are never above 150, and drop down from time to time. Lv, RWE Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile Re: Nosebleeds Mac, I have been having a lot of nose bleeds. Guest guest
Hi Lyncia, I too had a lot of nosebleeds before my transplant. My platelet count was always low...anywhere between 59 and 70. Occasionally it was over 100. My gastroenterologist prescribed vitamin K for me. It was not covered by insurance and a month's supply cost $50 out of pocket. Guest guest
Every time my wife went into the hospital they would transfuse either vitamin K or platelets. Guest guest
My Mom had really bad nosebleeds while suffering with end stage renal disease. The ENT who saw her told her to use a couple of squirts from a saline nasal solution. You can get it OTC at any pharmacy or at Wal Mart. It is inexpensive and really helps. Hugs........... Guest guest
You hit on something with me too. Ardis had been told by the docs to try to drink pomegrante juice. I think the gastroenterologist told her to drink it. Wow. Now I know why. Guest guest
Lyncia, I'm sorry about the nose bleeds hun. I don't have cirrohsis & I get nose bleeds ALL winter long. I live in MN & the heater drys the air out. Some folks have a thin lining in their noses & it cracks when it's dry. I'd call your doc & let him know but I just wanted you to know that it is common. Many hugs honey, ps: I use the finger w/ water system to get moisture up there. GOOD idea mac c ! I live in my own little world, they like me there! Mac, I have been having a lot of nose bleeds. Is this common? It is somewhat dry here, but I have cnetral air and the air doesn't seemed to be that dry. Lyncia
