Guest guest
Hello , Thanks for your very full and interesting reply. Not wishing to get too involved with this because I find I am already reaching for the Dictionary of philosophy, nevertheless, as a herbalist, it is intriguing to contemplate the enormous breadth of inconsistency and inherent contradiction between apparently internally consistent arguments. It seems to me that the assumptive premise is a matter of pure belief in the extent to which the analytically reductionist and the empirical holistic approach could ever possibly square with each other. On the other hand, on re-reading that, it sounds like a load of over-presumptive twaddle. Or is it ? There is little doubt of the truth of your assertion and validity of the question : > Given the enormous variability in artemsinin content in different > chemotypes, coupled with seasonal variations and different preparation > methods, I am intrigued as to how we might figure an " appropriate dose " of > the whole plant relative to artemsinin? > Yet, also I have heard a lot about the French endobiogistes finding that by and large, variation in chemotype does not demonstrate any significant variation in effect. In their case the French say it is the neuro-endocrine 'terrain' of the patient which causes effective variation and that botanic species not chemotypes are significant. (I have attended JC Lapraz's lectures but I cannot quote the literature - its all in French!) I bring this all up (again, I suppose) because, it seems that your question is valid not only to artemisia, but to any herbal medicine. Which brings it all back down to square one - which for me is the annoyingly poor quality of the basic philosophical definition of what on this 21st century earth is 'herbal medicine' - and does the definition naturally vary from country to country, because of the necessarily indigenous aspect ?
