Guest guest
Hi, Jill, my name is Bobby. I am a recovering alcoholic with end stage liver disease. I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I have heard many good things about the Cleveland clinic. Is your husband on the list for liver transplant? They started an evaluation for me last October, but it was stopped for reasons that I am not quite sure of. Feel free to contact me anytime at yahoo messenger, my username is robwalkingeagle. I will say a prayer for your husband and hope the tips does what is supposed to and buys him some time. From what I know about tips it is usually a bridge to liver transplantation. I hope in his case he can be a transplant candidate. I would like to extend a welcome to you and all the other new members of this group. There are a good number of kind and loving people here in this support group, and while many lurk, many more actively do research and support each other in their quest for answers. Please visit our photo album and feel free to add. Also, I have a blog which is my own way of dealing with my disease. http://billybobswildride.blogspot.com/ Thanks, Bobby Aragon, moderator, livercirrhosis support at yahoo groups I'm new Hi . Guest guest
Welcome Jill, My name is Pamela. I was caretaker to my mother Joy who passed away to glory Feb '08. Mom had non alcoholic cirrhosis after being diagnosed with a fatty liver 30yrs ago and then mild cirrhosis 15 yrs ago. I hope the TIPS procedure is a help to your husband. You said that he is afraid it will cause his liver to fail faster? Why does he think that? Has he talked to the doctor about the procedure? One of our physical therapists brother had the TIPS procedure and it was a help to him. I don't know enough to comment, maybe someone who has been there done that, will chime in. Feel free to ask questions here, lots of info and GREAT folks! MAC and Bobby are wonderful! I've been out of town for a bit and just getting back into a routine again. Pamela I'm new Hi . Guest guest
Hi Jill, Welcome to the group. I'm sorry to hear your husband is so sick. From what I've read TIPS doesn't necessarily prolong the survival rate of cirrhosis. It can on the other hand cause other complications or worsen current complications such as hepatic encephalopathy. It is used in many cases where patients are not suffering from encephalopathy but have other severe complications such as esophageal varices. The TIPS procedure will redirect blood flow and lessen the pressure in the portal vein helping control or eliminate the bleeding varices. This comes with a price however and TIPS procedures are usually a last resort. Below are some links regarding the procedure. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/517157_ http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=tips & bhcp=1 http://my.clevelandclinic.org/devices/shunts/hic_transjugular_intrahepatic_porto\ systemic_shunt_tips_wyntk.aspx http://www.emedicine.com/radio/topic764.htm MaC I'm new Hi .
