Guest guest
, Wow, I am glad I could help you! I know that Elaine on the hyperthyroidism/Graves site has always been against SSRI's with thyroid disease. I began to find out why! And the perspiring!!!!! I felt my hyPERthyroid symptoms come back on SSRI's!!!! Anxiety, perspiration, shakiness, sleeplessness, no appetite,,,,,,,,,,,,YUK! I think "natural" is the way to go if we are still having depression after getting all of our hormones optimized unless the depression is causing too many problems in living (like not wanting to live). We are so ready to go for antidepressants, I believe, when we feel depressed because we have been told to do so for so many years. I know that is my tendency! I have also been told by my thyroid doc to get on Nordic cod liver oil for the many things it contains to help depression, concentration, health, etc. It has Vits. A,D & E in it, as well as DHA, EPA, and other Omega-3 fatty acids in it. As thyroid sufferers, even without the thyroid, we need all of these good things in our diets. And it has no fishy smell and can be put in juice without a taste. It comes in peach and orange flavor so goes very well in juice. I give it to my teenage girls (who are doing very well on Armour with their hypothyroid symptoms). Both of my daughters have less to no depression, hair stopped falling out, and have so much more energy with less napping, I believe is the result mostly of Armour - PTL! AND THEY HAD "NORMAL" thyroid numbers! But they were having all these symptoms. I have little faith in numbers to detect thyroid disease except at its worse. I was not diagnosed by numbers until I was so far gone and nodules had eaten up my thyroid gland that I had none left! Numbers are a reference only, not a diagnosis, I have learned. Its the symptoms that count. Love to You! , Houston Re: RE: Metallic Taste--Armour & Imipramine Thank you ! Yes, I'm in agreement about the SSRI's (Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, and God knows what else in that group). I had it in my mind somewhere that these were thyroid reactions I was getting every single time a doctor put me on one of these, but I've never confirmed that in all my little researches. I'm SOOOO glad you told me that. Funny thing, I was put on every one of those by a doctor who was looking right at my thyroid profile, and who refused to put me on anything BUT SSRI's every single time that I complained that I was getting worse on each one of them!!!! I never took any of them any longer than 3-4 weeks because on every one of them, I would get nauseous, turn a yellowish color, see sort of in yellowish tints (if that makes sense), and I would feel "stoned" so to speak. As a matter of fact, I had trouble answering people back when they talked to me, and I also noticed that I had almost stopped blinking! It was ridiculous. I thought that if this was undepressed, then, please take me back to the depressed state. I even stated that in the doc's office, but to no avail: the idiot would push another SSRI at me. You know why, don't you?-----the little man/woman with the brief case had been in every single time pushing. Again, the big ole drug companies. YOU don't know how YOU'VE helped me today! RE: Metallic Taste--Armour & Imipramine, You are correct......imipramine (Tofranil) was not the antidepressant which causes hypothyroidism. It was Zoloft. Sorry. Anyway, I hope you are feeling better really soon. I appreciate all the wonderful things I have learned from you! Sincerely, of the Houston area
Guest guest
Can you please tell us more about the Nordic Cod Liver Oil. Where do you find the flavored version, and how much do you take? I have been on many SSRI's over the past 10 years and just finally stopped taking them. That is really scary for me, but I too, have started the Armour in June, and something gave me the strength to get off the other meds. So far, okay, but I find that I still get really sad, and very teary and can be very irritable. But I am trying to rid by body of so many years of Prozac etc. Thanks for enlightening us! Guest guest
Thanks so much . I will place an order for the oil. Also, have you tried either SAM-E or St. s Wort? There are so many brands out there and it would be nice to know if anyone has tried them and if they worked. Sue
Guest guest
Hi Sue! Here is the website and the telephone # where we got our cod liver oil: nordicnaturals.com / 1-. It is manufactured in Norway. Once the bottle is open, one needs to refrigerate it to keep it fresh. My doc told us to take 3 Tbls./day. You may order it in orange or peach. I understand about the medicines for depression. I have been on plenty in large and small amounts. My last psychiatrist realized that the meds were not helping me and kept looking at my labs to see what else could be wrong. He finally told me that I might want to get off the meds just to see if I felt any different. It was a year later that I found out I had thyroid disease (I had known I had nodules 14 years before then, but no one called it "disease" because my blood levels were "in range." HUH! It was downhill after that. I know you must be scared about getting off everything and it will take a while before you brain signals will get back to normal again. You might try SAM-E to help you along. It is a natural anti-depressant. God Bless! of Houston Re: Metallic Taste--Armour & Imipramine & other SSRI's Can you please tell us more about the Nordic Cod Liver Oil. Guest guest
Sue and All, Yes, I have tried them, but it was when I was having thyroid problems and nothing helped me then - not even prescription drugs! But I have know people to be helped by them and did a whole lot better on them. It takes time, like any natural aid, to work. You would probably need to be on them about two - three months before you notice a difference. I would keep a journal, if you try them so you can document your progress. Changes would be so slight over the two months you might think they are not working. I plan on taking them soon as I get everything out of my system. My thyroid doc says they usually add T3 to Armour to help with depression. I had heard people taking extra T4 meds, but not extra T3! I may try it because I know the sadness can get us down for two long if we allow it. IT IS SAD WHAT WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH! And it IS sad what my family has been through. Before my surgery, I was a raving maniac! I was not sleeping, eating, and felt like surgery was my only hope....until I found the websites. My family had to suffer with a very sick, cruel mother at times and my husband had no wife for about five years when my rapid descent started. My thyoid was covered by nodules - calcified, hot, and cold. They say I had no cancer.....but I was dying. I was hypERthyroid at the time and had strong heart palpitations all night with the sweats day and night and "crazy as a loon!" ATD's helped at the beginning but not for long. I begged to have surgery! My intuition was correct - I needed that poisonous venom of a thyroid was killing me and my family. WHAT WE WENT THROUGH WAS A HELL I CANNOT IMAGINE ANYONE ELSE TOLERATING! I believe I have become a much better person as the result. I had to depend on God to get me through it. I had no one else....my family could not tolerate being around me and I hated me as well. But God carried me through all of it and now I feel like I have a new lease on life! May God bless each and everyone of you especially those who are still suffering from this disease! Let me tell you, it does get better! I almost killed myself several times before the end. "Divine intervention" saved me! And helped me find these online discussions. I am blessed. Guest guest
You've said it all . Yes He did, and yes He does. In my case, my sorry marriage needed a dose of a new peculiar aggression that I had devedoped at that time. Really, it sort of helped me to zoom myself out of a sorry situation. Before that, I was so timid, backwards, etc.....All things work together, and that's what I believe, no matter what.
