B12 is key vitamin in keeping us mentally sharp as we age, scientists confirm

Posted September 29th, 2011 by admin

Vitamin B12 is vital if we are going to stay mentally sharp into old age, scientists have confirmed this week.

Researchers from the Rush University Medical Center say low levels of the vitamin in the blood can lead to brain shrinkage and cause cognitive problems, such as memory loss and slower thinking.

The discovery was made when they analysed blood samples of 121 elderly residents in Chicago. They found that, according to MRI scans, those with the lowest levels of the vitamin in their blood also had brain shrinkage and other damage.

You can increase your B12 levels by taking a supplement daily, or regularly eating fish, milk, eggs, poultry and meat, especially liver.
