Mirena is a progestin-only contraceptive.  I would expect that she would not bring in a good supply while using it, because it does mimic the placenta.  I have no further advice, because I am very squeamish about the idea of a foreign object in a woman's uterus, and how scary the side effects are if a woman does manage to conceive while using it.

Hello  EveryoneI need you help with this oneDoes anyone have a opinion or knowledge about the Mirena IUD?I have a client who is the adoptive Mum (she has IUD inserted) who is following the Jack Newman protocol loosely for pumping pre birth for induced lactation.

Here is my questionDo you think by removing the Mirena IUD it will impact her hormones? When would you recommend doing this? Thanks

My experience with clients with the mirena IUD is that it can be devastating to milk supply. If she wants an IUD there are other options available sans hormones. Here's my blog post about it if you'd like to refer her to it. http://www.second9months.com/?p=597 Beebe, M.Ed., IBCLC Lactation Consultant/Postpartum Doula www.second9months.comwww.facebook.com/thesecond9months.--- Subject: Re: Induced LactationTo: Date: Thursday, March 1, 2012, 4:25 PM

Yes. Theoretically. However, many IBCLCs have reported that mom's milk supply has decreased with use of the Mirena. Just like Depo *should* increase milk supply -- but same thing.
