Re: pork thoughts?

After reading about this I have certainly wondered about the issue of pork

too, wondering if perhaps the persepctive shared in NT was related to

religious mores originating from the Middle East (Christian, Jewish,

Muslim), as 2 of the 3 religions seem to have concerns about eating pork and

shellfish--I also wonder in some of these area, in the absence of

refrigeration if the historical call to abstain was more out of concern for

preventing illness, a concern I am assuming was greatly reduced in coastal

regions of Polynesia, Alaska, etc. I am just wondering, I don't know all

this for a fact.

In a recent discussion with our local WPF chapter family, I was told that

Weed had commented that historically pigs ate the barnyard waste

(including manure of other animals) as a source of already-fermented foods,

that their stomachs are not equipped to process the type of un-fermented

feeds they receive these days.

Religious values aside, it's hard for me to believe pork is such a bad thing

when it is consumed so widely in Latin American and in many places in

Asia...

Just wanted to note: it's not only orthodox Jews who follow Biblical

food laws. Many non orthodox Jews, messianic Jews and Christians

follow what the Old Testament has to say about nutrition. God calls

pork (and shellfish) and abomination and unclean. It's certainly not

my or anyone else's place to " object " to anyone eating pork, but I

(and probably my kosher companions) would certainly not promote it,

especially as a healthy food.

The reason pigs are banned from the dinner plate is because they are

cloven-footed but don't chew the cud, not because of trichnosis. The reason

Muslims

banned them is because Jews banned them, and Islam was founded almost entirely

on borrowing from Judaism and Christianity.

Neither Christians nor Jews ever interpreted these as health/sanitation

issues, and I don't think the economic reasons are very convincing either. I

don't

know why so many people insist on reading in an ulterior motive into these

things. It seems some people (not speaking of you) are incapable of

entertaining the notion that a religion would do something for a religious

reason.

But wouldn't the ease of differentiation simply make us easier targets? That

is, were the situation reversed, it would certainly be advantageous to

disguise oneself as of pork origin, providing they are not cannibals.

Did someone suggest a nose ring? Dad never had nose rings on breeder sows or

boars. They're only protective when piglets are real young. Worst problem is

their not laying on weaker piglets and suffocating them. Had a bull with a

nose ring which ended up being a not good example to brother 13 months

younger than me. Brother went under the fence one day when he was about 4, I

was playing outside, yelled to Mom, Bill was in with bull, she came flying

out of the house, he had bull by the nose ring, pulling and saying C'mon you

ba****d obviously just like Dad had done with him there before. Was cute and

funny but it could have been very dangerous which he learned from that.
