Weight gain questions

Hi

This question is more medical than diet, but as there

is such a wealth of knowledge here, I'm hoping someone

can help.

For most of this year, I've been fairly bloated around

my abdomen. My diet has been getting better and

better, and when I made a concerted effort to have

stock and sauerkraut at least once per day, the

bloating started to disappear. I got to a comfortable

size and weight where my clothes fit me well.

Now, the bloating is back. For some very odd reason,

it is normal for me to lose weight before

menstruation, and gain it afterwards. This is what's

happened to me again. I'm back to my clothes being

too small and uncomfortable, which I hate. It is

definitely bloat, not fat.

I have NO idea what is causing this. The only thing

different that I'm doing now that I wasn't doing a

month ago is kombucha on a regular basis. But there

might be something very small which is causing this -

eg, paprika in my dinner a couple of nights ago. Or

the red bell peppers which I had for the first time in

a month. Maybe it's the different kind of fruit I'm

eating. But the weight gain AFTER my period I find

very confusing. I can't tell you how much this

bloating affects my moods. I've struggled with this

for so long, and hate the fact that I have a healthier

diet than anyone else I know, yet have the oddest

figure with a huge belly sticking out.

Oh, one last thing has occurred to me - could it be

VIt B Complex supplement? I started taking it 2 days

ago. It's yeast, soy, sugar etc free.

Can anyone shed any light?

TIA

Jo

Hi Joanne, I know that you're on a low-carbohydrate diet,

right? Are you by any chance using Splenda? I've found

that the maltodextrin in the Splenda creates problems of

the sort you describe. One thing those of us on low-

carbohydrate diets often forget is that certain things,

like maltodextrin, although not adversely effecting blood-

sugar and insulin levels, can still adversely effect the

ecosystem of the digestive tract, just like an excess of

the other kinds of carbohydrates can. Another problem

could be that you're eating more vegetables than you're

used to. If so, indigestible complex sugars in them could

be the problem. Not even vegetables are without negative

aspects, and can't be eaten in excess. Raw vegetables are

especially troublesome in this regard. It could also be

due to some kind of intolerance of gluten or the starches

specific to grains, if you still eat them, but Heidi can

tell you more about that. (-:

Do some research on doing a detox.

Hi

Thanks for your reply...

Right.

No, I use either stevia or sugar. I only use sugar

very occasionally, a teaspoon in my decaf coffee if I

have a coffee craving (about twice a month!)

Another

Could be, although all I eat in the way of veggies at

the moment is kraut and soup (leek and lentil or

fennel) so nothing is strictly raw. And the lentils

are soaked before I cook them.

I gave up gluten a few weeks ago. It had a progound

effect to start with, mainly on my appetite which

reduced greatly. Now I feel just the same as I did

before giving up gluten - bloating etc.

Maybe it's the fruit, in which case I suspect my yeast

problem has come back (I really thought I'd got rid of

that!)
