Guest guest
Just a note on night guards.. the cranial osteopaths I've been to have all advised against them, because they restrict the mechanism from its natural movement. Cranial osteopathic treatment can help jaw problems, but unfortunately it's not always easy to find a real cranial osteopath who does manipulation (most DO's are as mainstream as MD's these days). -

Guest guest
If any of you are interested in a D.O. who works in the Boston area and does exceptional cranial work please write to me and get his name. I didn't know if it was okay to put his name in the post, because he is my brother-in-law. He has treated me in the past and I must say I have been very impressed. This man is definately not main stream. If I didn't live on the other side of the country I would go to him for my TMJ. I use my mouth guard three times a week. It tends to wear teeth down, but protects the jaw joint. At least that is what my dentist told me! Who knows for sure? I have been listening to relaxation tapes at bedtime and find it helps my jaw and my sleep quality. I would also suggest trying Feldenkraise (sp?) work for the jaw and/or for any part of the body which hurts. It is amazing how much a person can retrain their muscles, getting rid of pain with this method. I have a set of Feldenkraise audio tapes and the one I use the most is the jaw one. When I finish using the tape, even my voice sounds different. More relaxed, is what people tell me. Guest guest
> what cranial manipul;ations can they do that is goign to corrent teeth/jaw problems ? > with misalignmend ect , A bite problem can be a symptom of restrictions that involve bones of the skull.. a cranial osteopath would use gentle manipulations to restore proper movement and correct the underlying problem. (it's much more complex than that!) Unfortunately I'm not there anymore.. I lucked out with a terrific DO when I was living there, fixed my scoliosis. But that was back in the early 80's and he's probably retired now..I don't think it was your BIL :-) There are listings of cranial DO's by state, that can be obtained from the Cranial Academy. -

The best information that I've been able to find on T.M.J. is the book " TMJ Syndrome - The Overlooked Diagnosis " by A. Goldman, D.D.S., and he too warns against using regular guards and splints. They can ultimately make the problem worse. He has a site at http://www.headandneck.com/ and when I went to relocate the address for this message, I was surprised to find that he's put his whole book online. It's at http://www.headandneck.com/book/TOC.htm . In it he describes his drugless, nonsurgical treatment for T.M.J.
