Dee and All,

I emailed West re thyroid test PP and she said she didn't say exactly what you heard, Dee, because she doesn't know that immediate testing is necessary. (I know I've misheard and misinterpreted things at conferences because I'm often furiously writing notes). She stated that she strongly suggested moms be tested as soon as possible after delivery and then tested again a few weeks later to be sure thyroid levels are within norm (0.5-3.0). She also said that delivery does tend to change levels and waiting 6 weeks could be too late. I think she just doesn't want to imply that hyperthyroidism is a given for all moms but that earlier testing than 6 wk is prudent to prevent possible changes from the euthroid state. I've personally had one mom who didn't have levels checked and did become hyperthyroid but to my recollection, eventually with the help of Dr Gabbay, she was able to work it all out.

Per , just want to clarify her statements. Her answer to me clarified my question, now it'd be great to have some references or even case studies. Will be searching and let all know if I find something. Again, thanks Dee for your post as it led to clarification.

Warmly, Barbara

Thanks for sending her clarification, Barbara. While I did understand that becoming hyperthyroid doesn't happen to all women, I thought it could kick in much sooner than 6 weeks pp. I guess "sooner" isn't quite as soon as I thought (just a few days)! Good to know. And you're right--trying to take notes at a conference yet still hear what the speaker is continuing to say can lead to some misunderstanding sometimes!
