Guest guest
We have a great local microbrewery here in southern Wisconsin---actually we have lots of them---but my favorite is New Glarus Brewing Co. They make an unfiltered beer that " undergoes its final fermentation in the bottle. " I called them recently about whether they pasteurized their beers and they said they " flash pasteurize " their beers *except* their unfiltered beers, namely the Zwickel. http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/beers.html (bottom of the page) Of course, I've been buying this beer exclusively now. It's definitely cloudy, but the taste isn't much different. Having just now finished off the last of the six pack, I'm wondering: am I getting any good nutrients from this because it's not filtered or heated? I remember reading somehwere in NT about the line between fermented grains/gruels/porridges and beers being quite fine in traditional cultures. Makes sense, but somehow this bottle of Zwickel doesn't seem terribly nutritious...hmm, but I do notice that the aftertaste is a more rich and grainy-flavored. Anyone care to comment? You can find Bell's at Liquor Depot or any pretty nice liquor store. There are other unpasteurized beers especially at " ritzy " liquor stores, but sometimes the people who work there don't know that much about them. The ones with lots of hops are good, they just have more of that " bitter " hops taste. Sounds great! I'll look for " Bell's " . Do you know of any others? Do any local microbreweries have unpasteurized that anyone is aware of? Guest guest
> For other unpasteurized beers, ask the " beer person " at Surdyks, Liquor > Depot, the liquor store my the Lund's in Edina, etc... Thanks, Therese. I was just starting to look around for this stuff, so this is really timely. I'll look for the ones you recommend. ) I found Bell's at Surdyk's and bought one to experiment with, but it's a little too fruity for my taste. I had a great beer at Granite City, a brewery/restaurant in the Quad Cities in Iowa, a very dark and rich brew, and proprietary so you can't get it anywhere else. I discovered that Granite City opened up a new place in Maple Grove, right on I-94, and they use water that is so very purely filtered (for brewing purposes) that it tastes almost sweet when you drink it plain. Granite City's food leaves a lot to be desired, though... yeck! :o/ ~Joe

Yes, the original Granite City restaurant is located there, which is why I thought it odd that it would pop up in Iowa before coming to the TC area. ~Joe

Guest guest
Hey Joe, I'll have you know that a Granite City pub/restaurant just opened here in Eagan, just down the road from me! It's right on Pilot Knob Road, the exit from I-494. Hubby and I can vouch for the beer! ;-) Sara R.
