Guest guest
Well, where to start..... Has the school system already done any kind of evaluation? What kind of contact have you had with the district? What county do you live in? I know there are lots of you out there reading this who are IEP "experts" as well. Let us know about the above and we can continue on from there! One step at at time. I would encourage anyone to go through the IEP process even if they decide to use none of the districts resources. At some point, you will most likely use the schools and the more practice you have at IEP's the better! Private school - public aid? I would like more info if you don't mind. We have never even had an IEP. We skipped the school system road altogether so I don't even have an idea of how to start out. I might mention that we hired the BCBA that contracts for the school system in our county and the school district considered it a "conflict of interests" for us to use the spec needs preK while using the BCBA privately at home. Stacey, Although the school may have some point here, it comes across more as a handy dandy excuse not to serve your son. SDs have lots of these and you have to learn the law in order to spot them. I agree with - it takes a while to get good at advocating for your child in IEP meetings - find out what the school is willing to do and who all the players are. Guest guest
good advise from vanessa! you might also want to check out the asa website under www.autism-society.org and click on resources. there is also a really good book put out by the georgia advocacy office titled "advocating for your child's education"...this book is a good one to get started with....their number is take care, tiffany The only contact that we have ever had with the SD was at the transition meeting from BCW to the SD ninety days before my son's 3rd b'day. That was when we met the BCBA. The school sent the BCBA to our home to observe our home program and that has been about the extent of it. When we found out from the BCBA that the school found it a conflict of interests for my son to attend the school and use him for a consultant- we just never pursued it after that. I guess that was a dumb move on my part but live and learn I suppose. I have not had any contact with the SD since. We live in County on the west side of Atlanta. Is the first step to get an IEP? Can you get an IEP without attending the spec needs preK? BCW did little to educate us about the topic and since my son was in another school I failed to ask further questions at the time but now I feel like I could be cheating him out of services that he could really use. Thanks for the help Stacey Private school - public aid? I would like more info if you don't mind. We have never even had an IEP. Guest guest
The first step is to contact them again. Tell them that you had the BCW transition meeting, but did not develop an IEP. Tell them you now want to develop an IEP. Do this over the phone and then follow it up with a short summary in letter form and mail(certified) or fax(your fax will give you a date/time) it to them and keep a copy for yourself. Ask when you could expect to be scheduled for an evaluation. Keep it short and sweet and wait to hear back. Give it a few weeks and then contact them again if you haven't heard anything. Guest guest
I will make the call asap but a really dumb question first- How does an IEP help a child who is not enrolled in the SD? I thought the IEP was for children who were enrolled in public school only. Private school - public aid? I would like more info if you don't mind. We have never even had an IEP. Guest guest
First, Special education is not a place it is a service. For preschool aged children there are several places and ways that the service can be delivered. One place is in the traditional sense of a public school building itself in what you might consider a special education classroom. For the preschool aged child another option is to have services delivered in a community based setting, such as a daycare, pre-school, ect.. What this could possibly look like is that you have enrolled your child in a private pre-school and a special education teacher either comes out to facilitate or consultate with the pre-school. Speech and OT could also do the same. The type of service that is reccommended is a result of the IEP goals and objectives. The service reflects the needs of the individual student. The place in where this service is carried out should in the least restrictive environment (where he is being educated with a regual ed curriculum with typical peers). In developing an IEP, you will have the opprotunity to get the facilitation your son needs at his private school. HOWEVER, please seek out some more informaiton about the whole IEP process so you have the best chance of making that happen. Tiffinay noted some good places to start on her post. I'll be glad to help you along as well. Private school - public aid? I would like more info if you don't mind. We have never even had an IEP.
